CostCentral is offering the HP LP2475w for less than $550... $529.45 to be exact. No shipping fees (FedEx Ground). Sales tax in California and Pennsylvania. Provantage offers the monitor for $508.18, but you will be hit with about $21 postage (and tax in CA).

24-inch H-IPS panel; 1920x1200 resolution.
6ms response time.
178-degree viewing angle.
DVI (x2); HDMI; DisplayPort; Component; supports HDCP.

HP's LP2475w is probably the only 24-inch IPS monitor you can find for less than $800 (compare Apple $900, NEC $1100), and I very rarely can find it listed for less than $600 net. It is one of the most highly recommended displays on XTKnight's LCD thread, and though it has its issues (colour uniformity is perhaps the most worrying), if you get a good one, you'll have all the visual goodness that IPS is known for. That said, you might have difficulty exchanging a less-than-perfect specimen at some vendors (Newegg is a notorious example).

If I hadn't purchased the Dell 2209WA earlier this month, I'd have ordered this display five minutes ago. Still giving it much thought... The DoubleSight DS-265W offers a 25.5-inch IPS panel, but there doesn't seem to be much in the way of backlight controls. In any case, I prefer the smaller dot pitch on a 24 or 23-inch display.

Updated: Quite a few vendors are now offering the monitor for less than $550. As S44 noted below, even HP is selling the monitor for $570 now. Can't help wondering if new IPS displays are coming.

That's a pretty good price. The iUnitek looks to be one that you might have to be prepared to go through some hassles if there's a problem. CostCentral at least claims to be an authorized HP reseller. Might be worth the extra $70 just for that.

Not a 24" but you may want to look into this 22" for 229 (if you buy from Dell Small Business)

http://accessories.dell.com/sn...en&s=corp&sku=320-7825

It is one of the newer LG e-ips. The benefits of an ips monitor but almost the cost of a tn panel. If this is the first time hearing about e-ips some basic info here.
http://www.displayblog.com/200...ps-lcd-panel-update-2/

Pretty much LG developed a way to allow more light through for an ips panel thus you don't need as bright as backlight which is the most expensive part in a monitor.

Supposedly 23 and 24 inch varieties that are 1080 or 1200 are supposed to come out in May according to the rumor mill. From LG as well as other sources that use the LG panels (for example Dell uses an LG panel in the 22 incher I linked above.)

Here is info about the upcoming 24 inchers

How does this compare to the old Soyo Topaz S monitors? I think they used the same or nearly the same panel?

The topaz was mostly TN or P-MVA. some claimed they got S-PVA, maybe they were right about it. No IPS panels in that model though.

The HP LP2475w is a great value for its price, only ~$1000 NEC IPS monitors are better than this HP.

For general office/work productivity, getting two Dell 2209WA for the price of one HP is probably a better choice.

I've just checked prices on 'Froogle' (I still think of it thus) and found that a slew of vendors are offering the LP2475w for less than $600 now. Is it the economy? Is HP liquidating this model? Is 'e-IPS' in 23/24-inch sizes coming after all and dropping midrange monitor prices?

The Hard|Forum thread is now 100 pages! I'm a little worried by the text issues Deeky and Forceman have been suffering. I spend at least 70 per cent of my time on a computer reading text.

Provantage is selling the monitor for $537.51 after one includes shipping fees. I seem to recall that many punters preferred buying their displays from Provantage? They appear to have a fairly liberal 30-day return policy, though the customer must still pay for return shipping.

If you look, the price is down to $570 at HP's own site. The question is, what's the best place to buy from return-wise in case you get a unit with the color uniformity issue, etc.?

Something else to consider at a slightly lower cost is this Dell 24" S-PVA display for $500 and free shipping. With the Dell you also get a 3 year advanced exchange warranty.

Not to call you out or anything, but what's wrong with moving your screen 6" further away from you?

Allies, my desk isn't the largest (nor my room!), so there's a limit to how far I could comfortably site a bigger monitor. And it does seem a little silly to buy a larger screen just to position it further back, heh... I wish they still made 23-inch IPS screens; it was nice to have .258 mm dot pitch on the old Apple Cinema Displays.

That said, if there were a great deal on, say, the NEC LCD2690WUXi, I'd buy the thing and place it as far back as need be! I know from your DoubleSight thread that you pulled the trigger on the DS-265W. I'll be very curious to learn what you think of it. I was tempted myself, but DoubleSight's QA, the lack of backlight control, Hard|Forum opinion that it was inferior to the DS-263N -- all scared me away. The price difference between the HP and DoubleSight is small enough at this point that I'll probably go HP when I finally work up the nerve to order a 24-inch monitor. Wish the HP didn't have such a bloody ugly stand...

Fair enough. The monitor will be in my bedroom so it'll be seeing double duty as a TV (via HD tuner) so the extra size is beneficial in this case.

I'll try to do some testing as thoroughly as I can, and will report back in that thread.

To be honest, I was kind of scared from reading the HOCP thread as well, but after going through the thing entirely it seemed like only a few people were commenting first hand about the monitor...

Other reviews I've seen have been pretty good. The bad reviews that I've come across have been posted on multiple forums/vendors sites (ie newegg reviews).

I have my hopes up and hopefully they're not shattered; in any case, now's a good time to be buying a monitor!

Edited for my lack of reading

Well, you could try for a deal on theNEC 2490WUXi, but if anything went wrong after 90 days you'd be at the mercy of NEC's (admittedly very generous and forgiving) customer service. Or you could buy a third-party warranty from techforless.

In any case, if you're interested go through this link and search for LCD2490 and it's ~$500 before exorbitant shipping. FWIW, I got one in January and it's perfect except for a hum these models often have. Not a deal for the faint of heart, although the return policy is lenient within 30 days.

DoubleSight DS-265W now available for $370 after rebate and coupon on Newegg. The HP LP2475w is a superior monitor, but at $370 for a 26-inch IPS display, the DoubleSight is incredibly tempting.
