HT setup

I'm thinking about selling my current 2 channel receiver for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound receiver. I'm looking at the Onkyo TX-SR504 which cant convert component to s video or composite from what Ive herd. No problem if my TV had component in but it doesnt, just s video and composite in. So i'm trying to figure out some way to get this working and have surround sound.

My DVD player has composite, component, optical, s video, and coaxial out.

I'm confused on what you're asking as well.

1) To get surround sound, use optical or coax out from your dvd player.

2) If your TV doesn't have component, just send s-video signals to it. The receiver will just pass the s-video to the TV.

May I also ask why your upgrading the receiver? Do you also plan on upgrading your TV? Do you have extra speakers already?

Just don't run the video through the receiver.

I'm wanting to get a new receiver as my current receiver is just 2 channel and I want to get a 5.1 setup going and already have all the speakers except a center. Im looking at the amazon deal for the TX-SR504 for 169.88.

What I'm trying to figure out / asking is what would be the best way to hook this up and have full surround sound / DTS / Whatever. After thinking about it little more just using composite video right from the DVD player to TV then optical or coaxial to the receiver should work?

Use S-video rather than composite. You can run straight to the TV if you want, or you could go through the receiver if you want to do input switching with it.

Use digital coaxial or optical to connect the DVD player to the receiver.

With the audio from DVDs, the center channel is going to be the most used speaker.

If you can find a matching one for the rest of your speakers, that would be good. Otherwise, think about getting a nice one. It's going to be the most important speaker for HT use.

Hmm well I don't really have the money to spend on the receiver and a decent center until I sell my current receiver. Looking at the manual it appears to be ok to not run a center as you select which speakers are connected and such. So was just kinda hopeing it would be ok with out it for a little while.

Yeah, it will be ok. The big thing about having a center is that if you have more than one person watching a movie, the dialogue will be centered for the different seating positions. If you're watching on your own and will be able to sit right between the front two speakers, then no big deal not having a dedicated center.
