Confidence in the forecast will go up considerably in the next 24 hours. It has to finish making the turn north before there can be any real accuracy in predicting a potential westward turn. The slower it goes the more chance it will kick out east and miss us completely.

I predict that it will turn east and head out to sea. Why? I have weekend plans and tend to have good luck with these sort of things.

Eleven people died in the storm.

One hundred people died in the evacuation.

Looks like it wants to bypass Florida and most of the east coast and head straight at me. Uppercut to New York.

It might nail the Carolinas, it might blast NJ, or it might miss altogether. Depends on its exact track over the next 12 or so hours, and how it's caught up in the trough running up the coast.

It's amazing how good the models have gotten and how much public information comes out. I remember growing up in Florida in the 1990s and hurricane predictions being awful.

So, the question is, has Joaqin hit the trough, or is it going to go out to sea. Hope it's the latter.

I didn't evacuate... But it was shortly after Hurricane Katrina and all three local TV stations had 24 hour team coverage all screaming "you are all going to die"...

Existing Hurricane plans anticipated that only those in low lying vulnerable areas would leave. But given the exhortations of TV reporters and City officials millions more decided that they also needed to leave...

Immediately, all the highways filled up and shut down... At least one bus full of old people burned up, with the old people inside. Something happened to the brakes that started a fire that spread to the oxygen tanks that the old people needed...

I've ridden Typhoons out while outside and Hurricanes out while inside. Last place I'd want to ride one out would be on a highway full of people with no water, no food, no gas, and nowhere to go...
