Yeah, I thought it may have been due to dehydration or starvation out on the roads too. That is an awful way to die. Feels like the beginning of Last of Us.

Hmm... maybe I should get that generator that I've been holding off on buying.

Do NOT hesitate or you there will be NOTHING available. Also get as many 5-gallon gas cans as your space allows and super important is buy 4-5 quarts of whatever oil your genny uses. A lot of people here in FL bought genny's in the year of the 'cane ('04) but forgot to buy oil as well. You will get enough for one fill when you buy it but a genny works it's ass off and will need a lot of oil changes. They showed a small-engine repair shop during the peak of the '04 nightmare and he had dozens of 2-week old machines with ruined engines as people were running them at full capacity and not changing the oil. Even worse was the fact that NONE were repairable under warranty. Check to see the type and viscosity, (usually straight-30) and be ready. DO NOT buy any Dollar-store garbage oil as it's service rating is for shit.

Mini-fridge for beer, generator for mini-fridge, extra gas cans to ensure adequate fuel reserves to keep beer cool.....did you plan ahead enough?

Ten years ago, Rita came ashore on the Gulf Coast as a Cat 3 storm.

Eleven people died in the storm.

One hundred people died in the evacuation.

Best of luck to all in Joaquin's path...

Yea, unfortunately the road system is not designed for everyone to be on it at once and mayhem ensues. Back in '99 hurricane Floyd was predicted to hit the Daytona area as a cat 5, I was working 2nd shift so we packed up and left before the official evacuation was ordered the next morning.
Watching the TV from my in-laws I-4 was a huge jam, people had left home and had traveled less than 10 miles in 2 hours, most did a U-turn across the medium and went back home. Luckily the storm took a last-minute turn and went north to the Carolina's. They (the FHP) were actually going to close all eastbound ramps off and make every possible lane available to ease the horrific mess. Then you've got people with beater cars that had no business being on an inter-state and were breaking down left and right.

Glad we don't get these here. Though, they're fun to watch from a distance via television when your property is not about to get flattened.

I live in coastal Connecticut and we got hit hard by Sandy. We're still very much in the running for a direct hit from Joaquin (or it could miss us entirely) and it's like everyone has already forgotten Sandy. I was in Home Depot today and it was almost empty. The people there were doing normal shopping, no run on generators or batteries or plywood. 2 or 3 days before Sandy hit there wasn't a generator available anywhere in the entire state.

Looks like it wants to bypass Florida and most of the east coast and head straight at me. Uppercut to New York.

He may not hit Florida but I like to think he will give it a big thumbs down on the way past.

Actually he has been producing some pretty epic surf for the past few days, and it should only get better as he moves north to scrub the pointy heads in the NE clean.

butane stove is a good thing to pick up. you can eat some korean bbq/hot pot when your power goes out.

Yeah, a butane stove is a great thing to have for camping and power emergencies.

Also good to have is some good LED flashlights and lanterns. I have some pretty nice Fenex LED flashlight that use the 18650 Li-ion battery that is a bit larger than a AA battery but has 4x the capacity. These lights can run for days nonstop on a single charge. Also good to have is a solar charger in case power is out for much longer periods.

Generators are nice too, but to get one spec'd to handle a house is pretty pricey. Of course, if you have solar panels on your roof and a battery pack to store energy then you could get by with a smaller generator and use the battery pack to handle larger short term loads.

Looks like it is moving off to the east into the Atlantic. Hooray, my weekend plans won't be ruined! We still have this Nor'easter to deal with, though.
