Don't know how to google?

Tropical storm to hurricane winds for 24 hours is predicted to cause power outages from Washington DC all the way to Toronto to top of Maine. Think how difficult it may be and how long for some to get power back.

Oh, let's not forget coastal flooding that may range from Delaware to Maine(full moon making the water level even higher) and possible blizzard in the interior.

It's unique, so the weathermen can't help but orgasm over it, which hypes it up somewhat. It's HUGE, so even though the max winds won't be too crazy, it will still do a lot of cumulative damage. It's hitting an area that is heavily populated, unused to hurricanes, and probably has the oldest infrastructure in the country on average, so the number of people affected will be pretty massive.

I don't know why upstate New York cares, though. What's it going to do, snow on them?

Same reason this kind of earthquake was a big deal, and caused a fair bit of damage: The region's infrastructure isn't built for hurricanes. Or earthquakes. The ocean usually doesn't venture inland for a sightseeing tour, and the ground usually doesn't move.

Though I will say, it's also astonishing to see how a lot of infrastructure seems to have been built with the idea "Well maybe it won't ever storm here again." or "Maybe the wind won't ever go over 30mph." Then a summer storm blows through and you've got widespread power outages and flooding. Every. Year.

Yeah did some googling. What I gathered as to why Sandy got hyped up are:

1. The perfect storm: Sandy will meet with the cold front from north and wintry crap from west. They'll combine and become scary. Also Monday night is full moon, resulting in a highest tide = perfect storm for flooding.

2. Sandy is slow moving- the longer it stays, the more damage and flooding it will cause

3. Northeast and NY area are just bad at preparing for hurricanes and flooding (although we're excellent with snow). Also it's hitting the biggest population city in US- NYC.

They talk like it's going to be the next Katrina (which was cat 5). We'll see.

Live pic I just took now from my window.

I'm in Jersey City by Hudson River, we're looking up the river along NYC on right. Currently perfectly calm, just bit windy. Not a drop of rain.

Nice pic that has zero relevance since the storm has still to arrive, what's the point, " look, see, no problems", get back to us in 24 hours if you still have power..

More like I wanted to capture the before & after pic. It's eerily calm right now. It's almost 2am and it's still like that picture.

The tip is supposed touch us like right now.... nothing yet.

I'll try to take pics throughout the storm.

Ok, good luck, being that close to the shore you might get the full 90MPH experience, it is one you shall not forget. Oh, and the rain, that storm dropped 6 inches on me in 7 hours, we only got 40 sustained and 60 gusts so not a lot of major wind damage. Try to update, that's a nice panoramic view from where your at, hunker down..

"FEMA estimates that Hurricane Sandy has the potential to cause $2.5 billion to $3 billion in wind damage alone in the United States. The estimate, using standardized methodology called HAZUS, does not account for potential flood and other damage."

Here in Northern DE (non-coastal) we've been douched on all day with 20 mph wind gusts, but nothing all that serious. Of course, the hurricane hasn't actually landed yet. We're supposed to get sustained 40 mph winds (with 70 mph gusts) and heavy rain sometime in the next 12 hours. Driving restrictions (emergency vehicles only, punishable by law) in place as of 5 am.

It's not so much that the NE can't prepare for hurricanes. The winds aren't a problem for most people. The winds really won't damage houses. What *IS* a problem is that we have a lot of OLD trees - grand maples and oaks lining streets - 60-80 foot tall trees with large crowns. The ground is already muddy here - October was a pretty wet month. A few inches of rain, with sustained 40mph winds for as much as 24 hours = trees fall down. No big deal - I have chain saws. Yay, free firewood.

However, the number of linesmen to restore power is finite. The geographic area with power outages is going to be huge. Those without power for a week... this isn't a hurricane in Louisianna where, "oh no, no air-conditioning" - this is "oh no, no heat, and someone from Louisianna would freeze to death in temperatures 20 degrees warmer than it is here."

Someone asked about snow - in the center of the line of snow, they're expecting 40"+, it's mostly Appalachians though, above 2 or 3000 feet.

Where are they expecting it to fall as snow?

Yeah thats an issue in many parts of virginia. And I did not see anybody out trimming trees.

Huh? "trimming trees"? These aren't hedges, or 20 foot tall trees, these are 60-80 foot tall trees with huge crowns. They can cut out dead wood, but if the tree decides it's too much stress and splits in two, no amount of trimming, short of cutting the tree down, is going to fix that. *EACH* tree would take several hours for a crew to cut down. "Hey, let's cut down all the huge trees" - that would solve the unemployment problem for decades.

The difference between the N & S is that these trees haven't gone through these winds before. The more frequent large storms down there keep down the number of suspect trees. Also, many of the trees will be experiencing winds from the complete opposite direction as the predominant winds in their areas.
