I'm actually surprised they can get a temp cell tower up so quickly, seeing as the FCC regulates new antennas pretty closely as well.

A COW (Cell On Wheels) in this case is just using the existing parameters given to that site that is out of service. Just roll it up and shoot Microwave for transport to the COW and site is back on air.

During Katrina I set up 32 Microwave Hops to get the majority of New Orleans back up.

Where are the areas that look like these:

This is what devastation looks like.

Nice way to make light of a horrible situation with your trolling.

Stay out of the thread

Anyone here in or near the LES? I parked my car below ground near Houston and Ave A and haven't heard back from the site manager, though I doubt he has been there yet anyway. Any chance my car is not swimming?

I'm alive and kicking. no damage/floods in my local area (eg: within a block of my house) but power went out late Monday afternoon and is still out as of ~6 am this morning when I left for work. (called out on Tuesday on account of the NJ turnpike being closed, but once it reopened I was able to drive down to my company's central NJ office where we're on generator)

our Jersey City waterfront office is apparantly flooded and closed until at least next week (well, the office tower itself is flooded... we're on the 20th floor and I assume fine, but no power anywhere in downtown JC). I've also heard that the PATH may be shutdown for 7-10 days and some people aren't expecting to have power back until Monday.

fortunately, I was planning to go away on vacation to Portland, Maine this Friday. I was talking with my not-boyfriend about it last night (while sitting in my car trying to charge my phone) and we may just bug out tomorrow morning instead just to get somewhere with heat, hot water, and room service.

What I'm referring to is...am I blind are the posts on the building to the right (the one that's under construction) not straight?
I see that on two levels there. It may simply be a tapered sort of building design.

The question is, are these areas permanently cursed now? Will there be a repeat within the next few years? I would imagine insurance alone to surge up in price.
Depends on whether or not they decide to invest the money on some higher seawalls, or appropriate infrastructure to keep the ocean where it is.

Power went out around 8:30 Monday night and hasn't been restored yet, but PECO estimates that they'll have it back on in my area around 11pm tonight.

The biggest damage I saw in my area was some missing siding, broken gutters, and some moderately-sized downed trees. All family, friends and neighbors are safe so I call this a win.

Lessons learned:

- While not necessary, a generator would be nice to have to power a few small things (fridge, a light, a space heater).
- Gas stoves and gas hot water heaters for the win. Being able to cook and take hot showers has been great.
- Keeping basic supplies in your house (non-perishable food, water, etc.) is something you should be doing constantly. Being able to just sit back and ride everything out without having to worry about fighting crowds at the stores was nice.

What's the matter? Things like this aren't enough devastation for you? Some people are just sick jackasses.

It seems the partisan hacks have flooded the various forums and claimed this as a non-event. What's really the case is that they're upset that their bread and butter, the current political arena, was temporarily put on hold to focus on a natural disaster.

You can guess the political affiliation of the "non-event" people with about a 90% certainty. It's pretty sad that some people would see their own country suffer just to put ahead their political agenda and troll up threads with actual useful information because they didn't get the attention that their usual trolling gets for a few days.

+5 million

thank god for the gas stove, I was still able to make coffee (with powered milk after I used up the cream in my fridge) and cook anything that doesn't require an oven (since Sunday, I boiled lobster tails, made rice, scrambled eggs, and fried up some taylor ham)

my own lessons learned:

-my radio, despite having battery slots, doesn't actually work on battery-power alone; gotta invest in a hand-crank radio I think. the lack of news was killing me

-invest in multiple flashlights (as soon as the power went out, I went to check on my 90 year-old landlady... she didn't have any flashlights whatsoever and was nervous about candles, so I gave her my only flashlight and had to rely on candles myself)

-clocks... yeah, having no way of telling time was kind of a pain in the ass. all my clocks are electric and my cellphone battery died early on

also wondering if it would be worth it to invest in a UPS just to keep my cellphone charged. wonder how long that would last for.

ngl, my ex parks his car in an underground lot in downtown Jersey City... a huge part of me is cackling with glee at the thought it may have gotten flooded out.

looks like a skeleton has been found in New Haven, Conn. underneath a tree.

http://www.thestar.com/news/world/a...from-colonial-times-found-under-uprooted-tree

NEW HAVEN, CONN.—New Haven police say superstorm Sandy has revealed a skeleton beneath the town green that may have been there since Colonial times.

Police spokesman David Hartman says a woman who was with other bystanders looking at a fallen oak tree called police Tuesday after she saw bones in the upturned roots.

Hartman says the tree was planted on the green in 1909 on the 100th anniversary of president Abraham Lincoln’s birth.

He says the remains likely belong to one of thousands of people buried there in Colonial times. The remains will be evaluated by the state medical examiner.

Katie Carbo, who called police, tells the New Haven Independent she saw something in the tree roots, and found the bones when she removed some dirt.

She says the skeleton “should be given a proper burial.”

any CT ATOT'ers around in this thread?

I'm planning on driving up to Maine tomorrow morning, wondering how worried I should be about being able to get gas along the drive northward. down here in NJ, it's rough trying to find an open station and lines are blocks long... I should have a little over half a tank after I get home from work tonight, though, which should be enough to get me into NY/CT.

It's finally stopped raining for the time being. Though still cloudy. Some 7,000 people are still without power across Ontario. Though we got off very lightly considering the devastation in Jersey. On the bright side, maybe the Jersey Shore cast got swept out to sea.
