In RI here. Does this not read like a chain letter? Has anyone seen this before, or at the very least seen it yet on FB? I'm trying to convince my wife it's not real.

My dad is a geologist in the Seattle area. His company, Weyerhaeuser, pays for specialized weather consulting services. He just forwarded me a weather advisory that included the following:

"In the 36 years that I have been a weather consultant I have never issued a
special update for another part of the U.S. However, the developing storm
expected to hit the Central & NE Atlantic coastal areas next Monday thru
Thursday is so strong and Deep, that I feel compelled to urge any of you heading
in that direction to not go, or if you have family or friends going, try to stop
them. This storm will have severe impacts on commerce/trade and travel all of
next week, and the damage caused by the winds and heavy rainfall will last for
weeks or Months, perhaps years.

This could easily be the single worst weather event to impact the region from
Washington DC/Baltimore to New York City to Boston in our recorded weather
history, in the last 300 years! It is that massive and deep!

Hurricane Sandy skirts the outer banks of the Carolina's this weekend, it then
takes direct aim at New York City starting next Monday/Tuesday it curves back
to the W-NW. It is expected to make landfall over New Jersey/New York City and

Long Island next Tuesday & Wednesday with high winds, heavy rainfall and massive storm surge.

The destruction from this event could be total and massive: trees, power lines
& poles, buildings coming down, etc. This event/storm will impact commerce,
trade and travel throughout the entire region! Again, if you have travel plans to the is region, or have friends or family doing the same, I would cancel this immediately! If you have product that you are shipping East, or are expecting some from this region next week or beyond, I would make other plans!!

The long term effects from a storm this massive will take weeks or months to recover from, and for some, perhaps years!

This is a Hurricane that becomes what we call an Extra-tropical storm, or in this case a Mega-Storm! The ripple effects on this country could be impressive, from Political, to trade, to elections, to travel! this could also turn out to be a massive economic stimulus event, putting many out of work near term, but then the hiring begins once the clean-up starts!

For those living in the region from Washington/Baltimore to New York City to
Boston, GOOD LUCK AND STAY SAFE, AND GET PREPARED!!!"

Yes, it has caused deaths in other areas, it finally pulled away from FL last night, only gusty 30-35MPH wind left, thank god, yesterday we got 4+" of rain from 6-12PM, some minor power outages, I'll have to go out and survey the lawn and see how much shit came down, we heard several loud thumps on the roof last night, I'll have to inspect that too..

Wind field is expanding as it transitions away from tropical and becomes a 'cold core' storm. Do not simply just follow the wind speed or the official NHC designation for Sandy. This Hurricane is not going to look or feel typical. The greatest damage might be spread out over a larger area ala Irene.

If you want to gauge its strength, follow the barometric pressure AND wind speed together.

Irene is a good analog at this point, but this one could still tighten up and become stronger before landfall. In fact, it's expected to when it interacts with the cold front. Now we wait and see.

Well, my son gets to make money out of this... 18 hour days expected for a few days, keeping power up for certain things.

Someone on the last page asked for the weather forum - accuweather forums (I don't have a link to that thread on this laptop.) You can find it.

More crap to get people riled up. I have no doubt that Sandy is going to really, really suck, but for some reason I doubt that it'll be the apocalyptic storm that everyone is freaking out about. I think that all of the folks in the NE (including me, I live near Philly) will be fine, though maybe without power for a few days.

As of right now this storm is more of a threat to the mid-Atlantic states than New England. Still bears watching of course.

Wtf did you think they mean? That millions of people are going to die? Of course, most people are going to be fine. But damage - early estimates are $1 billion. And, power may be out for a few days, or even a couple weeks for many people. (p.s., snow + no power means it's going to be frigging cold in many people's houses.)

You have what 3 differant systems combining . The tornados alone will cause massive damage its back at cat 1 with winds over 75. What happens when cold moist air combines with warm moist air .Places will see melon sized hail . flood tornados . This storm is big but its far from being a perfect storm . that comes later

I'd be happy if this turns out to be just hype but I'm preparing anyway. Hoping for the best for all of the ATOT gang.

There is no such thing as a "flood tornado", a big storm like Sandy might generate flooding and spawn tornado's but those are separate events. The largest hailstone ever recovered is 1.9 lbs, not quite melon-sized but plenty big to do major damage to cars and even dwellings..

No sign of my original post of this beast.

Ah yes, the great oracle Dave obviously knew about this storm before it started, probably because of latent clues Romney hinted at during the 2nd presidential debate. Repubs are behind Sandy.

Well this really screws up my week: I guess I'll have to bump grocery shopping up from Tuesday to Monday. :'(

Though I may actually do something slightly different and park my car away from its usual place, which is right under a tree. In this one way, I miss having a car that was worth only a little more than its tires plus the gas in the tank.
The tree's endured decades of Erie's windy, soul-killing winters, but the individual branches aren't necessarily so durable.

Better idea, push it back a couple of days. You do not want to be in a grocery store a day before a major storm hits. Or even a couple of days. I stopped by BJ's to pick up a couple of things and walked out without buying anything because the store was such a zoo. People were shopping like they were going to be without water and electricity until Christmas. The carnage was truly awe inspiring.

I saw one guy buying nothing but a 60" TV. No flashlights, no batteries, no groceries. I liked his style, he and I were the only 2 people in the store not panic-buying.

Back when Charley came barreling across FL (unexpectedly) I hit a grocer to get more ice, it was packed when I got inside, I noticed a flurry of activity in one isle in particular, the BEER isle. I got my ice and a few other things and for curiosity's sake went to the beer isle, everything was gone except 2 cans of dented Schlitz, LOL. People in the parking lot were honking, shouting, flipping off left and right, I was glad to just get home.

Here's a post from Jeff Masters about this storm's potential, from the AP newswire, "Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground, said this could be as big, perhaps bigger, than the worst East Coast storm on record, a 1938 New England hurricane that is sometimes known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people."

Kinda gloomy... :|

Watermelon-sized, spun from a massive Flood Tornado!!!!!OMG!!!

The flood tornados freeze the water as it's spun upwards into the cooler upper atmosphere and then melon sized hailstones are rained down upon the earth. Everyone knows this.
