It's not the wind from sandy that poses the worst threat, it's the monster storm surge coming at high tide with a full moon, that combination alone could swamp parts of NYC subway system for a month and since the power is underground they might have to shut it off intentionally if this type of flooding occurs .

You're right. I've been reading up a bit more and realize it can be a big deal even if the winds aren't the primary concern.

Here's hoping it ends up being mostly hype!

down to 2 cupcakes, situation critical D:

I think I may take a walk to Dunkins before the rain starts... pickup some muffins or something to eat for breakfast in case I wake up with no power.

Dude, I doubt there will be much of anything left, your facing a huge storm and almost guaranteed power outage with 2 cupcakes?, that's just sad..

Later, Sandy will be going across the Gulf Stream. Surface waters are fairly warm - 7 or 8 degrees higher than usual for this time of year. Here's a buoy 150 nautical miles East of Cape Hatteras. http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=41001 Surface temperatures are still 79.9F (at the time I posted this.) Some strengthening can still occur. She's starting to wrap up her Southeast side, but she's too big to intensify the way small hurricanes can. In about a day, Sandy will officially be non-tropical, thus not officially a hurricane. However, that does NOT diminish the power of the storm a bit.

It's not just a nor-easter, as someone above alluded to - it's like a hurricane wrapped up in a nor-easter. Potential now of 10's of billions of dollars in damage. Let's say the value of losses is 50% of that of Katrina - yet people are downplaying this all over. The weather forecaster for Long Island is warning of gusts up to 100mph; yet a poll (on a weather related site for LI) shows that only 32% are making any preparations at all, and the majority are completely unconcerned.

But at least now, Bloomberg has closed NYC schools for tomorrow, and is evacuating the A areas.

Wow just looked at that buoy and it's up to 80.1F for the water temp right now.

in fairness, I only started with 3 cupcakes

I have plenty of actual food, though... at present, 2 bags of rice, a box of ramen, various canned soups/vegetables, a loaf of bread, and plenty of meats in the fridge/freezer to cook. (and a gas stove, so that should be fine even in a power outage).

most importantly, I've got 2 6-packs of beer, 3 bottles of wine, and a stocked bar full of liquors.

hurricane or not, tonight I'm cooking the ground chicken in my fridge to make buffalo chicken meatballs... if I wake up with no power, I'll probably take all the meat out of my freezer and start grilling it up (iirc, I've got a couple salmon fillets in there and a package of turkey burgers). after that, I'll be down to eggs, cheese, and pasta/rice.

some of both, renovation taking forever, normally just make a sandwich, or eat some yogurt. however Ive been out of town for like 5 of the past 8 weeks for work, i have no food. should get counters on weds and then maybe a working sink on Thursday assuming the world does not end. final parts of the cabinets should go in on like the 8th

Sorry, you are probably too late to buy food, haven't you been watching the news? you will wind up on the street scavenging around like a squirrel for something, not trying to be mean or anything but that's what your looking at at this point..

I remember reading somewhere last year how much it would cost to shut down the subways and then start them up again. Astronomical. Also, many of the buildings downtown in Manhattan flood zones still have the original Edison DC wiring. (this I know from working in theaters down there). So a flood would just be a crazy complicated thing for the power grid.

North NJ right now, it's really windy and seriously cold. Not too worried about coastal flooding up here but it does affect the local streams & rivers. The saddle brook did flood pretty badly in Irene. fortunately I'm uphill from that.

Stay safe all.

Oh, Amtrack is shutting down. Wall Street will be open tomorrow.

correction - Wall Street will be closed tomorrow.

404, hype not found, storm has now formed an eye, closed up the ragged southern portion and has all night over the warm gulf stream to stay healthy or even gain a little more strength, sorry, again, not trying to be mean but if your not in possession of food and water at this time you will now experience the "hurricane diet", a "wish" sandwich where you wish you had some meat..

Better idea, push it back a couple of days. You do not want to be in a grocery store a day before a major storm hits. Or even a couple of days. I stopped by BJ's to pick up a couple of things and walked out without buying anything because the store was such a zoo. People were shopping like they were going to be without water and electricity until Christmas. The carnage was truly awe inspiring.

I saw one guy buying nothing but a 60" TV. No flashlights, no batteries, no groceries. I liked his style, he and I were the only 2 people in the store not panic-buying.
I ended up doing the shopping today; I didn't feel like walking through a windy, rainy parking lot tomorrow.
When I was there, it was somewhat busy, though I'm generally not there on Sunday morning, so I don't know what it normally looks like at that time. It could have been after-church people for all I know.
It looked to me like an elevated quantity of bottled liquids in people's carts, mainly water, with diet soda coming in second. The bread aisle wasn't stripped clean, and was in fact still well-stocked. Plenty of milk, too. It all looked pretty normal in that regard.

Plastic does leach some compounds into water that are not good for the body. However, drinking that water would be better than going without water.
As far as I know, the first big stink over the "plastic leaching chemicals" thing was the result of an undergraduate study, and not something peer-reviewed.

There has been concern recently over polycarbonate leaching out bisphenol A. The industry is of course saying it's safe, though they definitely have a big interest in protecting their bottom line.

A lot of other bottles are some variation of polyethylene, typically PETE (1) or HDPE (2).

Dunkin Donuts trip successful.

1 XL pumpkin coffee for now, and 2 muffins for tomorrow.

they were pretty well-stocked when I went there, at least as far as donuts/muffins went (a guy ahead of me tried to order a sandwich, and they were out of croissants). I think they're closing after the dinner rush tonight, though (normally open 24/7)

there were "flood zone, no parking" signs all along the streets that border the river, but they don't seem to be towing cars. I guess it's just an "at your own risk" kinda thing.

people on my block seem to be moving their cars into the covered parking lot, which I found strange. I can't wait to get a deep clean wash on my car tonight in the storm (though I tried to think ahead and didn't park near any trees)

I wish I had some strong drugs so I can wake up on Wed and avoid all this calamity. Everyone in my building is acting like its the end of days. There are 4 supermarkets near me and their shelves are still stocked full.

I can get in a car and drive a little bit further West if NYC runs out of water or food. Bleh.

I wonder how long until after this hits before Romney is criticizing Obama over it.

Obama did rush out of the mid-Atlantic area so he could get to Florida for campaigning before flights got grounded... if things go horribly wrong, that might be a little criticism-worthy (not that Obama's presence would have change anything, but it's pretty bad optics)
