how much money do you get back from insurance for a flood damaged car? is it the full price?
Usually Blue book average less comprehensive deductible.
No comprehensives, no $$
Tax loss 10% of AGI + $100 using Schedule A

Looks like the NY state gov is talking to the feds now about funding a permanent solution. Probably closeable flood barriers at Verrazano narrows, Arthur Kill, and Throgs Neck.

Tab to be north of 10B dollars....though this would be a bargain in hindsight.

any CT ATOT'ers around in this thread?

I'm planning on driving up to Maine tomorrow morning, wondering how worried I should be about being able to get gas along the drive northward. down here in NJ, it's rough trying to find an open station and lines are blocks long... I should have a little over half a tank after I get home from work tonight, though, which should be enough to get me into NY/CT.

I'm in Hartford and have been all over the area the last couple of days. It's fine here, as long as you're not near the shore or the lower left portion by NYC (so coming out might be a bit tricky, but not too bad). If you get stranded, post & one of us will run you over a few gallons from our generators

A COW (Cell On Wheels) in this case is just using the existing parameters given to that site that is out of service. Just roll it up and shoot Microwave for transport to the COW and site is back on air.

During Katrina I set up 32 Microwave Hops to get the majority of New Orleans back up.

Whoa neat! Can you tell us more?

"Lets build sea barriers AFTER a huge storm."

Big expensive infrastructure isn't sexy and our investment in it has been declining since the 50s. We have generally been reactive instead of proactive. By comparison most of Europe spends double what we do on a percentage of GDP basis.

ZeZe is probably hosed. No electricity, no water, his area is flooded, and his cars are probably flooded out.

I'm sure he has bigger worries now.

What incentive is there to build something to combat a problem you haven't had in 50+ years? It's not like NYC gets hit with frequent hurricanes and flooding. Say you build something like this and a hurricane never comes; people are going to say you wasted $10 billion that could be used for other things. Without the visceral reaction of a disaster actually occurring, it's impossible to get people behind infrastructure projects like this.

south central PA, we lost power for about 24 hours and had some (what I would have thought were pretty sturdy) trees get uprooted but that's about the extent of it here. According to flood reports on the Juniata we actually got a bit less water than expected in the region I think.

Judging by the pictures, he was very close to the water. The area right by the Hudson is not only without power but also knee-deep in seawater. They've been showing live footage of Hoboken all morning on the local news channels, both helicopter images and on the ground

That's 2 hurricanes in 2 years now. I recall only 1 hurricane prior to Irene last year in my 20 years living in the city. People here really don't expect these things, and they shouldn't frankly. They're incredibly rare in the Tri-state area. There are certain parts of Jersey that see some flooding, but that's mainly due to rivers, rain, and snowfall. The big problem is that when they do come, the Metro area is so densely populated that the damage can be astronomical compared to an even more devastating storm hitting some more sparsely populated areas of the country.

yeah he was in a high rise apartment building, so I'm just wondering what he's doing with his dog - letting him shit inside the apartment or what?

And what happens with 300 apartments in a high rise building trying to use toilets in hoboken? does the shit come right back up? lol

We need donations of bottled water, nonperishable food - deliver to #Hoboken City Hall, 94 Washington St. Thank you.

from the sound of it, Jersey City isn't as bad as Hoboken (which is flat-out underwater)

I work in a waterfront office tower fairly close to ZZ... according to a coworker, there wasn't significant flooding at all, but water got into the elevator shaft, forcing them to close up until they get the OK from the utility company.

and downtown Jersey City as a whole seems to be without power, judging by the facebook posts of a friend who owns a bar down there.

gotta say... for all the hate, Facebook has really been a lifeline keeping in touch with all my friends/family and finding out what's going on in various parts of the region.

He'll probably shit on his bed.

Some of the houses and smaller apartment buildings had sewage and water leaking through their pipes and into their homes. He's pretty high up so there's no way that's happening. If he was smart he'd have filled up his bathtub with water.

OK a little more

After going through what is still up and running, have determined what sites can get more radios installed to make up for the sites lost.

Many guys spent all night adding radios to the cell site configurations so the Field Techs can go to the sites and physically add the radios.

Doing this from Chicago and all over the country instead of having to go to New York to do it.

Many Field personnel from around the country converging on the area to help with the physical work that has to get done.

Gasoline issues here in Wayne, NJ as well. Only a couple of stations have Regular / Mid / Premium gasoline. Some only have diesel. Lines are over 4 blocks long (would probably be about 1 hr wait time) I still have some gas for my generator and we can siphon from some of the other vehicles we have, if needed. Will try again in the morning to get more gasoline. Will be able to make it last until then, as we shut the generator off around 7PM or so.

Some subway service is restored in Manhattan. It appears they've pumped a lot of the water out above 34th street, everything below is still without power and probably still flooded.

That's creepy.

MTA is aiming to have some limited subway service back tomorrow. East side lines down to 34th street and west side line down to 42nd. No power to go further south. No Brooklyn-Manhattan rail service, 4 of 7 tunnels still flooded...extensive damage found in drained tunnels. Limited Metro North service to start tomorrow also.

The PATH system appears to be entirely flooded WTC to Exchange Place and 34th St. to Hoboken.

Dangling Crane to Be Secured in Coming Days
The city is hoping to tie down the dangling crane on 57th Street in Midtown; an additional crane will have to be constructed at the building to remove the broken boom. “The street will not be fully reopened until sometime this weekend at the earliest,” Mr. Bloomberg said.
