So, i am tired of 2 PC's, figured i would put my 2K8 R2 server on my main box, Win 7 in Hyper-V.. then RDP to the client.

Point being I have goggled the crud out of this for the last week, all I can see is no, unless you are prepared to spend $$$'s. I want USB pass through, devices... not just a USB stick that will show as mapped drive in the client.

I don't know if Microsoft has allowed / resolved this issue as of yet. Anyone?

I know there are alternatives currently available for USB pass through, client server software allowing pass through, but at $149 for one USB device, and I have more, it could get kinda pricey.

If I understand you properly, you are planning to use a single machine, with Server 2008 R2 installed on the bare metal and Windows 7 installed in a VM. Is that correct?

Why not reverse this? Run Win7 on box and Server in a workstation vm? It will be a much better configuation.

Hyper-V will probably not perform the way you expect. When you turn a Server 2008 box into a Hyper-V server, it will replace the traditional Server 2008 kernel with a hypervisor kernel, which will have a significant impact on desktop performance.

For your situation, you'll want to use a desktop virtualization product, like VMware Player or VMware Workstation. Both products allow for USB pass-through without any special configuration.

Thanks.. I was trying to utilize what I had without looking further. I had explored the VMware option, I'm sure at this point this will be the most viable solution. appreciate the thoughts!
