I'm considering participating in hypnosis sessions to help me change some of my habits. By nature I'm extremely skeptical of anything not measurable, demonstrable, provable etc, including psycology and hypnosis. How do you go about finding a 'real' hypnotherapist (ie not the guy working the local fair ), if there is such a thing? Does it actually work? Anyone have any experiences or insights they can provide?

if you don't really want to change your habits, nothing will help. Make a decision and follow through.

I went to hypnotherapist when I was younger, probably about 10 or so. I had issues with some warts that wouldn't go away. I had tried freezing cauterizing etc. for a most of my first 10 years and it wouldn't go away. Within a few weeks of going to the hypnotherapist the warts were gone and have never returned. I don't remember the guy I went to, but it was in a legitimate hospital in Boston. They definitely can help, but if its for changing behavior you also really need to want it.

aren't warts a viral infection? I have a hard time believing a hypnotherapist could remove a viral infection. coincidence maybe?. I do agree with your point about changing behavior.

My mother is a nurse and has issues with all non traditional medicine. I thought it was a joke going to the guy.It may be coincidence but I had these warts since I was a few months old. They were treated almost every other week for several years and didn't go away. After the hypnosis they were gone within like 2 weeks and have never returned, now ten years later. So if it is a coincidence, which it very well could be its a damn good one.

Fortunately, no, no gambling habit.

I'm actually trying to rid myself of a weird eating issue. Ever since I can remember, I've absolutely hated eating foods with certain textures, even if I liked the flavor of the food. For example, I like the flavor of onions or chives in food, but I absolutely dread the thought of crunching down on an onion in something I eat. Same thing with apples. Everything made from/with apples is fine, but I just can't crunch down on an apple. Those are just examples. Sure, I can force myself to do it, but having to force myself to eat those things (which is what I've always done) makes it unpleasant. In an effort to make my eating habits more healthy and diverse, I thought perhaps I could use hypnotherapy to get rid of the irrational hangup with certain textures.

See my post above, I clarified a little. It's not a matter of "kicking a bad habit", I'm trying to modify my reaction to certain food textures.

I have no idea about hypnotizing yourself to get physiological results (e.g. women getting 'hypnotized' to grow bigger breasts), but in my line of work (i'm a motivational speaker/dating coach), hypnosis is pretty common. What i've found is that it's good for short term results but anything long term needs to be as a result of a change in behavior or thinking.

For example, if you're experiencing a lock up when you want to approach a beautiful woman, i can give you a neuro linguistic programming exercise that will temporarily alleviate the anxiety...but it's only only a cure for the symptom. Ultimately you'll have to just approach constantly to get over that fear. I don't think it ever really goes away entirely (just like the fight or flight response when you get into a fight), but repetition sure makes it easier to deal with.

Guys have been trying to hypnotize themselves to be confident for years now, but they're only deluding themselves. The first time they get rejected, their house of cards collapses. You have to develop confidence by DOING stuff. You can't sit in your room all year and try to manufacture it out of nothing.

There is no way hypnosis cured warts. NO WAY. That makes as much sense as saying that the speech given at my college graduation cured someone's cancer.

It's not outside the realm of possibility that our brain can have physiological effects on the body. There have been a lot of "mind over matter" type events throughout history.

It's one of those things that can help, but in the end you need to want to do it and it will take more. And results vary widely. In general, the suggestions really are just "suggestions" or work by associating one thing with another that you are comfortable with. (ie: open spaces make you feel warm)

Hypnotherapy is indeed a real method of changing behavior. I wonder if the skeptics believe in biofeedback? Is biofeedback not a form of auto hypnosis?
