I was in the same quandry... was about to pull the trigger on the ViewSonic VP171B-2, but realized that a 17" LCD that foces me to 1280x1024 would cause eye strain. I currently have 17" crt on my desk at 1024x768 and it sits in the middle of my desk. Whatever lcd I buy, it's going to be moved to the back of my desk, so a 17" LCD will force me to see smaller text, farther away.
I really want DVI, even though I don't have a DVI card right now. However, I plan on upgrading sometime in the next year. I also like the idea of pivot and height adjustment as TN-film panels (which give you faster response times) don't have as good a viewing angle and older technologies (VA).
I saw this review on BeHardware about 19" panels and am going to buy the Hyundai L90d+
once CompUSA gets some more in. Make sure that if you buy one, it's the + model or you'll be disappointed.
BeHardware review of 19" LCDs for Gamers
The L90D+ review is on Page 4.
Note that the Hyundai gets a 9 out of 10 (better than the other models), but the conclusion on the final page doesn't mention it.... weird, but it may be due to the fact that it may have been tested AFTER the article was originally published. Also, this is atranslation from the original French and I've seen some errors in other spots. It looks like the recently released Samsung 915N is good, but it has a price tag of approx $500 right now and good luck finding one as it was just announced at CES in Jan. Note that the panel in the 915N is the same one that Hyundai uses in the L90D+.
Verdict
Tested later than the 913N, the L90D+ will however be available sooner than the Samsung (which will be available for most countries in number in January). The L90D+ is also cheaper and has better ergonomics. This screen has two inputs, analogical and numerical. It doesn?t change the picture or color quality, or the afterglow but at least you are able to choose. So this screen finally has a slightly better grade than its competitor. However do not get too excited as we know that only a few units will be available in the next two months so everyone might not be able to get one
Also, you had a question about Dead Pixel policies.. this site also has that information for each manufacturer. Note that some retailers will take your monitors back if you find them to be unsatisfatory, but may charge a restocking fee.
