I absolutely love being able to order quality cables on the cheap. So much so, that when I'm not sure if the 3' is long enough, i can order both the 3' and the 6' and still spend less than $5 shipped.

Of course, this isn't helping the giant rat's nest of cables (mostly computer but some HT stuff in there).

absolutely. i picked up 6 foot optical cable, 100 ft of 12 gauge wire, and a buncha connectors all for less than the cost of one of the Monster Nitrogen Infused Gold Plated Lava Forged Virgin Blessed optical cables at best buy.

Or thrown in on a sale. People on CL think you're giving them a kidney or something when you throw in a cable that cost you about tree fiddy.

My company just purchased some Monster HDMI cables for $199.99 each from Frys. I wanted to kick the IT manager is the ass when I saw the packages in their room.

Some IT managers want a safe expensive solution so they can't be blamed if something goes wrong.

The odds are that he makes similar cost analysis decisions when he buys servers and desktop PCs. Maybe it is time to for someone to review their other purchase decisions.

I have to differ.
I've ordered many cables from monoprice and have now stopped.
The quality is just not there.

The latest issue was with my HTPC and powerDVD HD.
I had a 15 foot monoprice HDMI cable running thru the wall to the back of the LCD hdtv.

Powerdvd complained it could not start because it could not determine the type of
tv connected. I thought wtf...?

When I swapped out a monoprice cable for a higher quality (and more costly)
cable, all was well. PowerDVD HD worked flawless playing blu-ray.

I just will not do monoprice anymore in order to avoid future connection issues.

I love them as well. My first purchase was four 10' HDMI cables they had one sale for $4 a piece. I haven't had a problem with them yet. I just make my second order for some CAT6 cabling and a couple mini USB cables. Very fast shipping and good CS. The fact they use USPS First Class is a major bonus. Its nice not paying $7 for UPS like newegg.

Well, at least he can buy them locally. A lot of people don't like dealing with mail order. And, I say this as someone who has ordered from Monoprice half a dozen times already.

Then you may have bought the wrong HDMI cable.

At 3', just about any cable will work. At 15', the cable makes a big difference. You can't buy the cheapest cable and expect it work. I suspect you bought a 15' 28 AWG cable. So, if you're going to shop at Monoprice, you buy a higher end cable... which is still inexpensive.

For inexpensive cables:

Up to 10' - 28 AWG.
>10 - 15' - 24 AWG. <-- 26 AWG would be fine too, but Monoprice doesn't sell it.
>15 - 25' - 24 AWG.
>25 - 50' - 22 AWG. <-- These cables are quite stiff and hard to work with.
>50' - Amplified system preferable

15' 28 AWG costs $6.90. <-- NOT recommended.
15' 24 AWG costs $21.67 <-- Recommended.

Note that many name-brand 15' cables are actually 26 AWG. That's fine, but the thicker 24 AWG cable from Monoprice is actually cheaper.

P.S. I don't think Monoprice even sells 15' 28 AWG cable rated for in-wall use. Many of the higher-priced branded cables aren't rated for in-wall use either. If you're aren't using an in-wall rated cable, then your setup is not up to fire code. If you're buying in-wall cable from Monoprice, for 15' you basically have to get the 24 AWG size... which should work fine up to 1080p60.

Audioholics HDMI cable shootout

Monoprice cables are included. For the vast majority of people, only the first two (or perhaps three) columns in the table are relevant, but max theoretical HDMI 1.3 qualification involves the fourth column. The fifth/last column is irrelevant.

Judging by the prices, it looks like they tested from Monoprice:

6 foot 24 AWG cable
15 foot 24 AWG cable
25 foot 22 AWG cable

It's interesting to note that Monoprice 25-foot passed the first four tests. The cable cost $41.
The WireWorld Starlight 39-foot cable failed all but the first test. It cost $1400. That means that this $1400 cable doesn't even meet the specification to work properly with my $99 Blu-ray player.
