We have quite a few immigrants in the Air Force (it's a fast track to citizenship) and they generally do well because they are
motivated, self-disciplined, have seen what the REST of the world looks like, and want to live all that American Dream stuff that many of my sluglike fellow-citizens expect but don't want to work for.
Send me more of 'em.

Yes, I noticed that they are extremely hard working. My girlfriend's step father works two jobs and sends the majority of his money back to the Phillipines for his son and family there.

Thanks for clearing a lot of things up

My numbers aren't reversed. Education, intelligence, hard work and perseverence will get you a middle class income, it won't make you rich. Getting rich involves a ton of luck.

I agree with Viper in this case. It involves luck, but not 90%. It involves your ability to see the opportunity that comes to you, and take that opportunity. You got to be smart, you don't need intelligence. Intelligence will make you a scientist, not a money maker. Education is great, but people usually don't know how to differentiate between education and school. They are related, but not the same.

People who believe that getting "rich" is 90% luck have blinders on. Yes, you need some luck. But I don't understand why people don't think it's possible. Get an education. Save money. Start your own business. Put in long hours. Voila! You are at least in the running, more so than if you work for someone else (unless you have a side business) or buy lottery tickets.

Let me recommend a book - The Millionaire Next Door (if you don't want to buy it in paperback, get it at the library). You'll see for yourself how little you know about "rich" people. I'll give you a little sneak preview - for the most part they don't buy expensive new cars, expensive homes, or appear in the local society pages. They own small businesses that clean office buildings at night, or make cabinets, for example. They live right down the street from your middle-class parents. But nobody suspects they are "rich", because they live a middle-class lifestyle.

If you think you have to be lucky to be rich, you are sadly mistaken. There are no guarantees, but there are ways to greatly improve your odds.

That's what I've always said. It depends on your social wealth too.

Did your government class also tell you how they get a free ride here? Not only do they not have to pay taxes for 7 years, they also get welfare benefits that many people who really deserve should get. If you were to live in my neighborhood, work at my store, and see how things really are... then you'd open up your eyes.

Excellent post and excellent book recommendation, my dad treats it as the bible almost.

My parents came here with $90 and my moms mother as a liability!!! Dad drove pepsi trucks for 35 years and only became a wharehouse manager ~70K tops i think. Mom has a PhD and never made much till she hit 50 teaching. I know they a milionairs a couple times over applying the trade in that book. And he drives an 86' buick roadmaster still. Luck? or hard work a sacifice?

You have to be lucky in order to be able to do those things you listed. Luckily, I think I can do those.

Like many have said, working hard, putting off self gratification for long term goals, but one issue that's been ignored, risk taking. Do you understand the courage it takes to move to a country that you don't speak the language of or know the culture and then invest your income in a business?

Hard work
Smart work
Long term goals
Risk taking

Luck is way down on my list.

You might want to rephrase, poor Americans are likely lazy. Wealthy Americans are not.

Good for you.

A few pieces of Asiana:

1. There are about 3 billions asians out there. If only a few percent of them are considered rich in US standard, that's still a lot of people. But majority of them are poor.

2. In addition to cosmetic and bragging purpose, jewelry is popular in asia as security. Asian currencies are not stable, so people invest in gold, diamond, etc. And yes, they hoard US greenbacks, as well.

3. They carry cash. Check is not widely acceptable as payment.
Can you imagine how fat your wallet would be to carry $1000
in Rupiahs in order to purchase a computer?

Please enlighten us.

If you are talking about tax treaties, US has tax treaties with many countries. Tax treaties may include provisions for tax waiver for the first several years. BUT, THEY ARE APPLIED RECIPROCATINGLY: citizen from country A working in US won't be taxed for several years, AND US ex-pats in country A won't be taxed for several years.

Sorry, the seven year tax holiday for immigrants is an Urban Legend.
Do you ever ponder over how immigrants come to the US and become really RICH?
Yep, I have pondered it. Here is your answer:

Wharton School of Business enrollment is 50% non-US citizens (immigrants). So while millions of American born high school juniors and seniors are eagerly awaiting the next publication of "The Best Party Colleges and Universities in the U.S." and making their selection based primarily on the prevalence of sex and drugs on campus, immigrants look for one thing - the $$$.

If I were a banker, I would loan $100,000 to someone fresh off the boat than a fourth generation American any day of the week. Why? The odds are better that the American will go out and piss the money away in one or more doomed business endeavors.

Jadedness and complacency has a lot to do with it. We Americans typically misspend the first 10 years of our adult lives trying to figure out what the hell we want to do when we grow up.

There a few other reasons, but you get the idea.

It's crazy! What do you think?

Imagine this. Claiming to be black[via author icon] and decrying immigrants as not deserving. You are a racist by ANY definition! Get a damn job !

That's right (though I'm still interested in the other reasons you think this might be).

Even though I'm sure all my brothers and I make more than our dad ever did we have fallen victim to America. We spend money on new cars, computers, DVD's etc which are all liabities. Not only do they cost money and provide no monitary return, they rob you of productive time one could be spent working and making more money. Therefore I will probably work forever.

Maybe it's a generational thing i donno. I wish I had the fortitude and conviction of my dad.

What are you kidding? Have you ever been treated to the SEETHING hatred and bitter envy the black community has for the Koreans and Arabs who open businesses in black communities? Its really something right out of Nazi Germany.

The old "Mississippi Burning" style white supremacy has NOTHING on envy based black racism. These people routinely rob and kill immigrant store owners for no other reason.
