WUSTL is a PR juggernaut. They send almost everybody around 20 letters + including a priority mail'ed batch of brochures.

This is to increase awareness of this school and to have a lower acceptance rating (figure that one out.)

It's a great school, and to go for absolutely zilch is a dream come true for me.

It was tough choosing WUSTL over Dartmouth, Northwestern, Amherst and Tufts but I don't regret it one bit.

I thought about Wash U, but there engineering department is nothing impressive, especially for the price tag that goes with it . .

Anyway, I've lived in Saint Louis for 17 years, and I know my way around pretty well. Wash U has a great location. Cross Skinker and you are in Forest Park, which is a fantastic place, huge park, great for walks, also has museums, zoo, science center, outdoor ice rink, etc. etc. Sledding, in the winter, best hills in Saint Louis. A short walk North of Campus is the U-city loop, a nice little hang out district with a fun theater, the Tivoli, that shows the cool movies you don't find elsewhere. The Hi Pointe, also an arthouse theater, is maybe 2 miles south of campus.

One place you need to check out is the City Museum. Crazy guy bought an abandoned warehouse and is in the process of turning it into a gigantic playground/3d maze. It's great fun.

There is a good music scene, too, the main venue probably is the Pageant, in the U-city loop. I go to shows more often at mississippi nights, in the landing (little hangout district next to the arch grounds on the waterfront.). There are a bunch of bars, a couple in the loop, that will stage good bands fairly often. We also have one of those giant venues for insanely popular bands, but its quite a drive to get to it. Don't remember what they are calling it these days.

Wash U is also pretty close to downtown Clayton, which is kinda a hangout, but has excellent food. Make sure you get to "India's Rasoi" at lest once, its one of my favorites. Also, a vietnamese place . . damn, forget the name.

Anywho, early welcome to Saint Louis. I'll probably be back in Houston when you are here, though.

edit: I don't know about the Jewish thing, but I'd imagine there is at least some truth to it. Haha, remember, saint louis is the Catholic Ghetto of the US of A. Another sight to see, even if you aren't religious, is the New Cathedral. Truly an impressive building.

I've lived in New York for almost 14 years now (sorta like you with St. Louis.)

I really loved Forest Park, kind of reminds me of Central Park here. St. Louis itself was a very clean city, and yes I know there are some bad parts but that's just the same as Manhattan with Harlem. The people were very friendly and I just loved it. I think that's what helped me decide to apply to Wash U early, that there was a nice city you could just relax in, instead of the pressure cooker schools in the middle of nowhere like Cornell.

I would have loved to go to Northwestern, Dartmouth or Amherst but I think I made the right choice. Thanks for telling me more about the city!

Do you still go to HS?

nope-first year in college (SUNY Stony Brook.) Would have gone somewhere else, basically somewhere like where you are going, but life always takes its turns. I'm from SI/LI, so I know how prestigous Stuyvestant is-the best public school in the nation.

My cousin went to SUNY Stony Brook. Are you planning to transfer out after your first year? I'm sure you can do it with some hard work.

Thanks for the comment, it's kind of unfortunte though. Stuy students were massacred by Harvard and Yale this year.

definitely want to transfer in two years, maybe after this year. I know you'll hate this, but nothing in my mind compares to NYU. Its like the hip country polo club of colleges. You're in a class with very distinguished and driven people, but its the prestige when you graduate and people understand the reputation the school has. My brother went for a semester, and it seemed like the perfect school to me. If not NYU, perhaps GW to get away from NY.

also with harvard, I feel there are only three ways to get in:

1. Be a super-genius. We had a person in our school-1600 SAT, 12 APs with all 5's, won Intel and Siemens Westinghouse-everything. He got in.
2. Legacy. My bloodline is Harvard, I'm marginally smart or a celebrity. I'm in.
3. Harvard gets their own international airport.

GWU is a great school. Nice little homely semi-campus like NYU. The Foggy Bottom campus was great, the metro was awesome. 15 minute walk away from Georgetown was great too. =)

Cheers. Good luck!

GW would not be that hard to get into either, nor is NYU that difficult. Georgetown's the killer
