I got a new job... Updated

Well folks, after far too much time of being unemployed I got a new job on Friday. The pay is not great, and it is not exactly in my field, but at least it is a job.

And no, for the flame fest that may ensue, I did not receive nor ask for state or federal help during my unemployment.

In a nutshell, I work for a HUD property for the elderly.

Needless to say, my second day on the job, I was setting up the community room, and an elderly lady weighing in at about 275 started to topple over backward right toward the piano.

Being the idiot that I am, and weighing a blazing 160 soaking wet, I tried to catch her before we had a major disaster at work.

While I did stop her from hitting the piano with her back, I had the pleasure of my wrist taking the brunt of her fall (right between her backbone and the piano)

So now my manager is worried (she and I are good friends) and wants me to go to the hospital and file worker's comp immediately. I, on the other hand do not feel that it is a break, and that given time it will heal fine.

I think it is just a cracked radius or something else trivial such as damage to the hyaline cartilage or synovial membrane in the wrist.

Cliff Notes: A typical "just my luck thread." Got a new job, second day on the job tried to stop an elderly woman from falling into the piano and damaged my wrist.

For those of you that will be saying "pics," see below...

:camera:

Yes, the pic is a little dark, I am not used to shooting left handed.

**UPDATE**

Well, after my manager insisted that I go to the ER after the swelling had not gone down for two days, I went. It is just a bruised bone, they gave me a shot of cortisone and set me up to see an ortho specialist on Tuesday.

I have been told that I can not come back to work until after I have a release note from a doctor, and basically informed that they are going to have to find a replacement for me.

I should have just done things my way, forgone the stupid medical treatment and I would still have a job.

Yes, I get worker's comp, but what's the use, I get paid until I am healed, and then, since I am replaced, join the ranks of job searching again.

Yup, you're having internal bleeding. I would have that checked out since if there is significant breakage, it could heal the wrong way.

did the old lady work with you or was she just "there"? I think thats the big thing when it comes to workers comp. You did get injured while on the job though. The responsible thing to do would be to get checked out and file a claim if for nothing else than just to be following policy. If you don't your most likely violating some regulation and it would be more likely to get you fired or screwed over than not filing anything.

I just plan to give it a few days and see if the swelling starts to go down. It just does not look good to be at work two days and get hurt.

It is not really bothersome unless I try to life anything, so I figure it will probably just heal normally in time.

Besides, there is nothing that they can do at the hospital other than give me a spint and a few painkillers, and I refuse to take the damn things.

I mean hells, a dose of Nyquil will put me out of action for 8 hours, and the last time I had painkillers (8 years ago) I lost 12 pounds and did nothing but sleep. Darvocet will knock you out quick.

Oh yeah, you're only 160lbs.

You really should go get it checked out and file a report. It might be fine and probably is, but if it's something silly that messes you up in five years...ten years; then you at least have some paperwork behind you to back up any claims you may have. It's not a matter of being tough and "walking it off," it's a matter of covering your ass for the future.

There was an event at the community room, and the elderly woman was a tenant that was there for the event. The manager was there and saw the whole thing and once she saw the tenant was okay she was laughing her ass off until she saw that I was hurt. I imagine that it did look extermely funny, with a 6'2" toothpick trying to catch a 70 year old heavyweight.

Probably looked like a demented ballet...

But I now have learned an important lesson. When the elderly fall, they do not try to catch themselves, they just go down like dead weight.

We filled out the OSHA incident report, and I am feeling like I am in a damned if I do damned if I don't situation. If I go to the hospital and it is something that needs me to be out of work a week or so, I will probably lose my job, while if I don't file, I will probably lose my job.

When you have been out of work as long as I have, actively searching for work, you will do almost anything to get a job, and don't want an idiotic accident to put you back on the "how do I pay my bills" list.

Reiterated by the fact that your manager told you to go check it out.

I just feel that they would think of a reason. Imagine that you are the HR manager, and you see an employee that came in for two days, whose paperwork is not even in to corporate yet and suddenly *boom* accident.

I mean hells, it looks suspicious to me, and I was involved.

Wow, aren't you a big, tough hardass. Oh wait, I meant dumbass.

Seriously, you are hurt, so go to the damned hospital or doctor. Unless you have sh|t for brains, you will realize we are in the 21st century where major innovations in DRUGS and PAINKILLERS will allow you to deal with the pain much easier. Who the fvck are you trying to impress?

When you have a headache coming, you should take medicine early on so you can avoid the real pain. If you wait for real pain and it comes and then you take medicine, you go through m ore pain.

Try and apply that here, just go and get it checked out now so if there is a problem it's easier to heal now
