OP: that really sucks. I hope you are able to get out of this. My only additional suggestion is that you clear the free space on your HD using one of those write-over utilities. I think playing techno-dumb is also the right way to go because most people don't even know what they're doing online so this would be very believable.

LOL. Given that college campuses are the hot bed of filesharing/downloading, they have some of the more sophisticated tracking and logging (ip address, room number, cable location, address, name, filename, protocol, etc). Some even keep their logs for over a year incase they have to cover their butts and handle the problem. Wiping it off your system does not erase those logs.

WTF do professors have to do with it?

The campus network people will gather all the data on this an any other violations and send their findings to whatever disciplinary group there is at this particular school. That group will then decide what punishment is appropriate.

I'm guessing that since the OP has admitted here that this is not his first time in front of the disciplinary group at this school, it will be a minimum of expulsion. He would be extremely lucky if that's all that happened.

I'm sure it has nothing to do with getting shot at, or mob mentality, or tons of other things. I'm sure it's an ethic battle completely. Which is easily compared to downloading a movie and trying to sham out of it...

He's the one idiot who got caught. Make an example out of him and the problem might get a little bit smaller.

Hint: Don't be the one to get caught and you don't have to worry. And especially don't be the person to repeatedly get caught. That's just dumb. Some people just aren't fit to be criminals, and by his own admission it sounds like the OP is one of these.
