i recently upgraded my CD-R/RW drive from a TDK 32x to a Plextor Premium drive. Before the upgrade(in my case downgrade) i was mainly using Memorex and TDK media. All of my discs would burn fast and from what i could tell w/ little or no errors(audio CDs were very compatible). Now that i have the "premium" drive i was hoping for some fast burns and sweet features. the errors were by default expected to be virtually non-existant. After several CDs(memorex 52x) not burning at anything higher than 16x i was really steamed and decided to turn off the Power Record function. This allowed me to burn coasters at speeds of up to 52x. There were two good things about that, one was atleast i knew shoddy dicks were comming out, and the second was the time it took to get a POS out of the drive. Granted that the 16x burns were readable but they weren't compatible w/ stand alone CD players. What made me happy was when i had the TDK burner and there was TDK media, please... match the drive w/ the media branded by the same company how could life get easier? What kind of sick people won't reccoment their product to be used w/ another of their products? Well, Plextor doens't brand media, and from what i hear the drives are reather picky w/ media choices. I've read reviews of all sorts of drives and i have come to realize that i have no idea what people mean when they say recoomended media "Ritek, blah blah blah..." i've never seen Ritek labled media. Don't get me wrong i'm sure that it's been branded by some other place but i don't know who or how to tell. I really want my Plextor drive to burn just one single CD at 52x that has less than 15K C1 errors(i use the plextor tools to check my disks) the only reason i say less than 15K is because that's about 1/2 the normal C1 errors i get. If someone would help me i'd greatly appreciate it. after my expirence w/ this drive i don't care if everyone else in the world has had nothing but gold from the Plextor people i'll never buy/recomend one of their drives unless this one works as it should. (oh yea for being a premuim drive i would expect this damn thing to take sh!tty media and handle it like a champ. chew it up and spit out a nicely burnt CD w/ little or no errors)

Have you tried flashing to the newest firmware? What burning software are you using?

If you hit enter twice, you can start a new paragraph.

Just a thought..

First thing I'd do is uninstall/reinstall whatever burning program you're using.
Check DMA of course. Change cables and check the jumper settings.
Firmware to the latest version. Different media.

I had/have an old Yamaha burner that didn't like DMA with the software that I was using.

Also, it is entirely possible your new plextor drive is defective. Maybe you should return it.

ok, well i appologize for the lack of paragraphs, however i implore you to attempt to write understandibly at 3:00 in the am.(i appreciate the flame from the 3rd person, i mean it's not like the first two could not read whaut i had written and therefore could not respond with helpful comments.)

Here's the deal... since Nero is so expensive and I love the format of it i had to use version 6.0.0.19 hacked... i think plextor is bundled with Easy CD Creator but i wasn't impressed with that when i installed it right after i put the drive in.

If i am understanding the suggestions correctly i should check to make sure that DMA is used(already did that when i was having 99% CPU time being used when i burnt CDs. i put the drive on DMA and now it works like it should but with the errors), uninstall the burning software i am using right now(nero), use the latest firmware(1.05 from what i could see on the plextor site and i've been using that for a long while).

I think i'll reflash the drive after i uninstall Nero and put easy CD creator on my system. If i have any more problems there after i'll asume it's the drive. I think i'm gonna grab a DVD burner soon or just completely overhaul the system so one way or another the problem should not bother me for too much longer.

Thanks for all the helpful comments!

You could just try the nero demo and see if it works. Also, Nero 6 is not that expensive. $9 on pricegrabber, where I got my copy from.

Well here's the deal... I reflashed the drive, deleted Nero and installed Easy CD Creator. Nothing helped. I get more errors on the CD than before and i am getting C2 errors now. I think this drive is messed up. Everything but the burning works great though. Ugh I think I'm gonna go with a Lite-On 812s or one of the Nu drives. Stupid Plextor drive!

doesn't work. or doens't work well. i'd rather it tell me that this CD is the worst CD it's ever tried to burn and it's a disgrace to it's pallet. well how about some recommendations? i'm completly clueless about what's good and what's not all i know are prices and my opinions are swayed more by numbers than names.

It should tell you who made each brand CD.
Here's a text file that tells you about it.
