I have cancer...

I've been battling this for a few months now and finally am undergoing chemotherapy to treat it. Back in January I started with an itchy rash all over my torso which went away after a month or so and then I started having lower back pain that just kept getting worse and worse and then my bowels stopped working. Almost nothing was getting through and I wasn't eating because of this. I went to my doctor and he sent me to the emergency room to have them do a CT scan and they found my lymph nodes in my abdomen were inflamed. This was causing my lower back pain and intestinal issues so they referred me to an oncologist and ordered a biopsy of my lymph nodes. The result of that was a diagnosis of Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a form of blood cancer that attacks the white blood cells. In the meantime, I still was in pain and couldn't really eat much and eventually wound up unable to keep water down so I went to the emergency room again to be admitted where they could run a couple more tests I needed before they started chemo, one was an MRI and the other was a bone marrow biopsy to see if the cancer had spread to my brain or to my bone marrow. Thankfully, it hadn't. Anyway, I am stage 3 and have undergone 2 chemo treatments and I'm feeling better but still have some pretty brutal treatments remaining. I will lose my hair with the last high dose treatment (I will be in the hospital for 3 weeks for a stem cell transplant with a few months of recovery) that will also wipe out my immune system and hopefully the cancer with it and then I will be in remission... hopefully. The good news is that I am still relatively young, at 58 years old, and in good shape so I should be able to beat this. There are no guarantees however.

Anyway, if you are experiencing any health issues keep pressing your doctors to get a resolution. You are your best healthcare advocate.

So sorry that you are having to go through this and know that all of us here are hoping for complete remission.

"Anyway, if you are experiencing any health issues keep pressing your doctors to get a resolution." This. In spades.

Yeah, recover man. If it makes you feel better, you're not alone with health issues., I have 3 kidneys right now since getting the news about end stage kidney failure and then getting a transplant

The cause of the kidney failure was largely long term lithium use and to a slightly lesser degree long time high blood pressure

Cancer treatments I would assume are much better today than 20 years ago.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you get better. I recently found out my brother has lung cancer, and has begun chemo treatments. Not sure about what you're facing, but they told him 10 years ago would have been WAY worse than now, with recent advances in treatments.

I don't know about in just the last 20 years, but I keep in mind the fact that in 1962 when Danny Thomas started St Jude Children's Research Hospital, 1 out of 5 children diagnosed with cancer in the US lived. Today 4 out of 5 live. That's miraculously wonderful progress in my mind.

A few years ago, ASCO - the American Society of Clinical Oncology - put out a retrospective: over the past 30 years, cancer deaths fell by ~1/3, largely due to reduced smoking rates, better detection, and fantastic advancements in treatments from the 90s. So progress is constantly being made. The biggest problem is that cancer is more descriptive of what the disease is doing (ie, uncontrolled cellular replication in the wrong places), and it is not very descriptive of the underlying causes, which will impact which treatments will or won't work. It's functionally hundreds of different diseases all lumped into a single category.

See, science really works.

IIRC, I once saw Danny Thomas live in a small Hollywood studio with family (probably mom and sister).

Hang in there, @JulesMaximus

Damn bruh, keep the topic updated on the regular and keep us in the loop about how it's going.

Edit: this being OT I kinda was hoping this was some bait n switch bullshit.

Might want to also talk to @Geekbabe, she is going through something similar and you guys might be a good resource for each other.
