I'm not opposed to MP3 piracy or couldn't give a rats ass about the recording industry, it's just that our university ran some tests and found that 35% of the schools bandwidth was being routed to Napster!

Thanks to the idiots at my school, they are now limiting the bandwidth on the residential dorms to provide more bandwidth oomph for the more academic areas of our university. I used to be able to D/L at upto 600kb/s on our 10MBps Network, but now i'm lucky to hit 100kb/s off peak. It's those idiots who go to class with Napster turned on that's causing all these problems.

These guys are too stupid to realize that there are other programs that function in the same manner as Napster and getting rid of it might get them to remove the cap.

Why don't your Net Admins running the tests start blocking some ports? 6996 starts to ring a bell, tell em to start there and get it rollin.

If your school netadmins were qualified techs instead of circus monkeys, they'd just block napster like USC did. If you're on the campus network you can't use napster or even get to Napster's site AFAIK

and they prolly think the admins should block you from downloading warez, movies, pr0n or whatever your into. you can hardly say that you need all that bandwidth for study purposes.

Yeah once it dies all you'll have to hear about are the other programs like aimster, gnutella, music city, bearshare, direct connectand anything else that any 20 year old comp. science major can whip up in about 10 seconds. someone start a poll to see which one of those has a chance of taking off if napster bites the big one.

Like almost everything in life, things should be enjoyed in moderation. Unfortunately, several people got a bit greedy and ruined it for the rest. However, you will probably be graduating soon and going to work in the real world. You will find out that companies limit Internet access and find certain ways to monitor you and ensure that you are productive - so get used to policies that will not always make you happy.

I know what u mean, happens in my school too. It's like u're playing CS on your school network. and your pings like 20 then it jumps to like 300, hate that when that happens.

wje- Unlike work, you're paying for you bandwidth through tuition at school. I don't give a rat's ass that it's a school . If I'm paying for it I better get damned good bandwidth. /me About to drive to earthlink dsl office and beat some ass.

It's true, but it will take some time for those other programs to catch on, by that time I'll be outta here and it won't matter. Now there are so many alternatives to Napster, if Napster dies, it will be a long a brutal battle before another leader emerges. And those idiots i'm talking about won't catch on until there is a leader in MP3 distribution.

EDIT:

And what pisses me off is that I go to Cal Poly, a polytechnic university which has one of the highest ranks(scroll down on link) in engineering and they can't come up with a better idea than putting a cap on out network.

At my university, instead of banning Napster they simply said: "Fine. You want to download all those things, go ahead. We'll just upgrade, but it'll cost you."

Internet access jumped from $45 a year to $145. Still not too bad, and we're allowed to download whatever we want.

Here's an idea -- MOVE OFF CAMPUS. Quit complaining about everything. My school has blocked napster and just about every napster clone out there. About the only thing I can use is irc. And I'm lucky if I can get half of your "capped" bandwith. I plan on getting an apartment next year and getting cable or dsl instead of depending on the stupid university's network.

For many schools paying for net access is mandatory. You have to have an account and it includes net access fees. You pay for it weather you use it or not.

Its funny, the only thing that i have found that really fast connections are good for are playing games and downloading massive amounts of PORN. Not to mention really big movies. So, in actualality, are you really hurting from going from 600-100. Most people would die for that 100. Not to mention that the guys who use the other programs and leaving them open while trading movies. I have left napster on for a week and only had about 20 songs downloaded (I have close to 2000mp3s, 3/4ths legal of course.). Im on an oc-3 with 10mb lan as well.

Sometimes the school is fsked up in their networking. They had a few servers here repeatedly pinging everything between noon and 6pm causing everything to come to less than 28.8 speeds during the day.

I work at UC Davis, and would you believe our problem isn't Napster? It's friggin CS!!! Servers always go to the one with the most bandwidth, and since the dorms have such a great connection, guess where all the servers are? Of course I don't think that the sys admins not blocking Napster ports has anything to do with their competency. It has to do more with the morality of it, whether they want to assume a police role and regulate what you can and can't access. Napster does suck up bandwidth, but the UC system does not want to regulate access. The university functions as an ISP. You don't see Pacbell closing Napster ports. You don't see AOL banning Napster access. Well same thing with the university. It's not their place to tell you what you can and can't access.

I hope Napster dies also. I'm pissed off at the people who hog all the bandwidth for cable users. Let them find the mp3s the other ways.. if they know any.
