Ahh! Which should I get?

Athlon Classic 900, 384 megs RAM, PF790 monitor?
-OR-
Athlon Classic 950, 256 megs RAM, PF790 monitor?
-OR-
Athlon Classic 900, 256 megs RAM, Sony CPD-G400 monitor?

I'm definitely leaning to either 256 megs RAM setup, because it is a lot easier to later upgrade RAM than it is to jump up 50 mhz or a buy a new monitor.

So basically... if you had to choose, would you get a 950 with a Viewsonic, or a 900 with a Sony? Is there THAT much of a difference between the two? Yes, I do graphics work, but would the extra dough be worth the Sony monitor?

Also, what do you guys think of the Abit KA7-100 KX133 board?

get either one of the last two, there's no need for 384 Mb RAM for most users. only reason I have 320 is because I found out that I could use an older 64 Mb stick from my previous computer, so I added it to the 256 I had in my new one.

Ok i odnt know what it is with people but jsut cause they have a "viewsonic or a kds" they think its the best monitor. Listen people read a damn review sony makes the best monitors. yes they are alot more expensive you think they just do this to make money? No sony is quality and thats what you will get when you purchase one.

And yes i have a sony but before i got it i read about 5 reviews all from different websites said if you have the $ get sony.

so the 900mhz with sony g400 (i have g400)

The third one...SONY is overpriced and you will most likely send it back anyway, they have really crappy packaging, I have heard (on this board). I have ordered 3 ViewSonics and only sent one back, and the one I sent back I never opened since the box had a deep puncture (I hate UPS) I just rejected the package and told onvia, they were cool about it and got me another one pronto. I love my PF815 and I even paid roughly $500 less than I would have for a Sony that would have honestly not looked any better (same tube in both monitors) and probably would have been damaged.

Edit: Do they do this just to make money?

Umm, let me think YES! My ViewSonic looks as good as that g500, and cost me $500 less, and ViewSonic actually knows what high density styrofoam is, people around this board tell me that Sony uses the same styrofoam that you find in the 7-11 coffe cups and that it is only that thick to boot. Not to mention that Sony is an evil corporation... Almost as bad as microsoft, you ever tried to do anything to a Sony PC? Let alone do anything on one?

As I expected, no one is really recommending 384 for RAM.

The monitor would most likely outlast the processor anyway, so unless I find some other neat ol' thing to buy, I'll be going for the 900 and Sony monitor. Knowing my pickiness, I'll probably turn around and find something else to stick in there.

...unless I win the lottery tonight.

Thanks, y'all.

Vich -

What websites are these? Besides Zdnet and the like I haven't seen very many monitor reviews on the web. I really do not trust reviews from those "general technology" websites - thus I go to Anandtech to read reviews on hardware. There is a slight problem with this approach when it comes to monitors since Anand doesn't review very many monitors. The solution is to go to a webpage geared towards a market segment that has a vested interest in monitors, in this case I choose a CAD webpage/magazine - Cadalyst: http://www.cadalyst.com/. Just do a search on monitors and you will see that the reviwers have an actual methodology (something lacking at Zdnet) for their testing. In these tests Viewsonic and Sony are typically neck and neck (also Mitsubishi - they make the tubes that Viewsonic uses). the deciding factor is usually price, which Viewsonic wins in a landslide.

I have a G400. It came well packed and intact from Onvia for $567 and free shipping. It is flawless and is far and away the best monitor I have ever had.

On Pricewatch: G400 for $555, PF790 for $419

I recommend the G400. I feel like I got my money's worth!

I'll bite, I got a 21" monitor for what some people pay for a 19" Sony, that is all I have to say about that...look guys its your wallet, not mine, I just like having extra cash to invest in something worth paying more for (read: 10k RPM SCSI drives) where you can actually notice a performance difference, and if I would have bought that Sony 2 weeks ago when I chose this PF815, the $200 I used on my SlotA tbird would not have been there, that is all I can say about that, hopefully tonight I will see you all at 900+ mhz.

I guess it does hurt a little when you pay so much for a monitor to read about how happy people are with a comparable product and a smile on their face cause they have a couple of hundred dollars extra in their pocket.
"Viewsonic and KDS think they have the best monitors"........
We wouldn't have bought them if we didn't think they were..for the money!

And now for Paulson's response:

Buy a gigahertz computer and a Viewsonice PF790 monitor. I like mine.
