I Need a New Laptop

i was looking at Mac Powerbook (God forbid) but i do alot of graphics and i thought it would be a nice addition to my PC world plus i can run PC emulation software i was also looking at the Sony GR290 or 390 or even the 1.2ghz toshiba i want one i can find at compusa cause i have a $1500 credit with them

I keep hearing really good things about the Dell Inspiron series of laptops on these forums. I have no experience with these laptops, so see what you can find out about them.

All i can say is............don't buy Toshiba, or any other cheaply made laptop. Go for the best one hardware wise, in otherwords don't skimp on the price when buying a laptop.

Are you talking about Mac G4 Titanium 15.4" Powerbook? If you're, that's the best looking laptop out there and as far as quality, it is much better than any Sony, Toshiba or Dell. It will run you more than $1500 though, but personally I still would get it anyday over any Windows-based notebook.

Have you ever used Windows emulation on a Mac? Feels like a turbo charged Pentium 166MMX even with the newest and fastest G3/G4 processors. So don't go that route.

I would first select which CompUSA laptop you want based on features alone, next read reviews and rank them accordingly last but not least look at the warranties and price. Sony and Toshiba make decent laptops but Dell and IBM's are a notch above them.

If you only learn one thing from this post.. learn this.. don't get a Toshiba. I work for a company that is a Toshiba repare center and you
simply can't understand the ammount of toshiba's we get in for repare and the lack luster support we get from Toshiba. Techs HATE to
work on them because they pay the least warrenty dollars in the intustry so they treat them like crap when they have to work on them.

I'd sugest a Compaq Armada.. the compaq persario is a crap line and they treat it like a crap line... Or IBM...

Personally I've been really intrested in Apple lately and I got an ibook.... I really like it! It's small and feels so solid. It gets about 5 hours
of battery life. If your a PC guy don't hate Apple... I used to be the biggest mac basher but I've come around. OSX and 9 feel refreshing
after haveing to support stupid people on NT/2k all day at work.

I am a graphic design student and it's like I leave my house with my PC and enter the Apple world in the school labs. crossing over hasn't been too painful but I'd hate to buy all the software.......especially when it's just too easy to get it all over the web for PCs. Isn't there a good laptop out there? any suggestions on what makes a good laptop?

the Mac PowerBook G4 gets my recommendation. I'm typing on a 667MHz G4 w/ 512MB ram, a 48G hard drive and a combo drive. 667? You can get 1.13G on a PC laptop, I know, but the G4 never feels sluggish and is plenty fast enough for Photoshop and Final Cut Pro... Wow. I loaded Final Cut Pro 3 on this thing -- the power of the G4 is amazing... realtime DV editing on a laptop is AMAZING. OS X is great too.

The sheer attention to detail is astonishing... These things are works of art.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a mac freak or anything -- I'm a PC guy, but Apple laptops are unbeatable, in my opinion.

EDIT: About the emulation software -- I run Virtual PC from Connectix with my own copy of Windows 2000 -- it's plenty fast for Office and kazaa, et. al. Just make sure you allocate enough memory to your virtual PC and you should be OK.

I've got a brand new HP Pravilion model N5425 athlon 900mhz. Runs like a charm on windows XP. 256 meg of ram, 3d rendering Video card (q3 is playable) ....etc. Built in lan, modem ...... CD-RW / DVD "in one" (combo drive) touch pad, lcd status display, expansion card slots, floppy drive..... the works....

i'm selling it cause im building a really good desktop for myself.
the HP laptop i'm selling for around $1000 + ship

I'de go for Dell if anything, but I like PC's over mac's. In a notebook I suppose a PC based laptop wouldent have any sort of advantage over a Powerbook other than a bigger selection of software at much better prices. Since you already have a PC, why not just get a high-end PC based laptop for compatability?

That 667 Mac Powerbook G4 seems like a high-quality product. That price is a bit much though.

The powerbook is one of the best choices for a laptop. It is a perfect desktop replacement for a PowerMac, and offers good looks, good performance, and flexibility.
I have a 500, and use it to do the bulk of my video work.

Windows emulation? Do you mean hardware emulation? Vpc emulates pc hardware, not windows. It allows the Mac user to install and run windows. PC emulation was never meant to be a total solution, and in OSX we can see why. The Mac is the best choice for a workhorse, unless you just want to play games, then get a dell or something.
