My current system:
Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H Rev1
AMD Phenom II x4 965 3.4ghz
8 gig ram
Nvidia Gforce 9500 GT

I would like to upgrade my video card. I was looking at a Gforce GTX 750 Ti.

I was wondering if it would be worth it to spend $30 more for a Gforce GTX 950?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814487156

I tend to play older games like Left 4 Dead2, Borderlands 2, and Payday 2.

Does anyone have a better suggestion?
How about a recommendation for a 24 in monitor? $250-$300

For the monitor, it's now possible to get FreeSync at or close to your price level:
Nixeus Vue 24" 1920x1080 144Hz, AMD FreeSync, 1ms, Adaptive-Sync 30Hz to 144Hz = $350

Or if you don't mind looking into widescreen gaming:
LG Electronics UM67 29UM67 AMD FreeSync 2560x1080 = $250

You would then pair it with an R9 380.

Another alternative, is to get a 2560x1440 IPS monitor even though it's 27" not 24:
QNIX QX2710 Evolution ll Glossy 2560x1440 27" DVI-D LED Monitor For Desktop PC = $230

On the NV side, don't bother at all with a 750Ti because GTX950 2GB can be found for $137.

The games you listed are not very demanding so it might not be a bad idea to look into the 2560x1440 QNIX IPS.

The main advantage of going NV is PhysX in Borderlands. The main advantage of going with AMD is you can pick up a 30-144Hz FreeSync monitor in your price range, something not possible as far as I am aware for GSync monitors in the $250-350 range.

Here is the current performance charts for AMD vs. NV cards:

Your CPU will bottleneck any graphics card better than GTX 750 Ti. Do you intend to upgrade your platform?

Even with your CPU, a R9 380 might be a good idea if you also buy a FreeSync monitor. But if you go to that level of performance, I'll say to look for a 4GB version of R9 380.

For similar prices, between GTX 750 Ti 2GB and GTX 950 2GB, the GTX 950 2GB is obviously the better choice. If the price difference is bigger and you do not plan to upgrade your platform, you could stay with GTX 750 Ti 2GB and keep the rest of your money.

I like PhysX effects in Borderlands 2 so this might also be a factor for you, when deciding between R9 380 and GTX 950.

Had a Phenom II X4 980 @ 3.7 Ghz paired with a GTX 670 at one time (about the performance of a GTX960). It worked pretty well with only a small amount of bottlenecking. It was definitely better than a GTX 750 Ti (which I also own and tried with it). For the OP your suggestion of a GTX 950 would be a good choice.

I had a Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale 3.0GHz paired with a GTX 660 (that GTX 660 was a big improvement over my older HD 4850 512MB DDR3). When I later upgraded the platform to a Core i5-4440 Haswell 3.1GHz (with the same GTX 660) I noticed improvements (not as big as the previous jump from HD 4850 to GTX 660, but still noticeable) in games like Borderlands 2 (which I played a lot, so I am very familiar with it).

His Phenom II x4 965 is closer in gaming performance to E8400 than to i5-4440.

GTX 750 Ti is slightly bellow GTX 660.

His Phenom will push a gtx950 quite well.
I vote for the 950 as well. A gtx750ti will bottleneck his cpu .

A Phenom x4 965 @ 3.4 is a much faster gaming cpu than a dual core e8400 @ 3.0.
Its more like a q9550 @ 3.3

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I'm going to get the Gforce GTX 950.

What are your thoughts on the Acer XB240H? It's more than I originally thought on spending. Is GSync worth the extra cost?
