I need help with linux.....

So im learning linux and lol, i know the answer to this is probally easy. But.....

How to unzip, or decompress, whatever.... files with the extension of .tar.gz, and after I download them what do i do to install them.....

I know i have to go to the console and type gzip with some augments and then the file path or something, and i type install and the directory to install it or something. Please help me or link me to a good guide that will help me.

Im using Mandrake 9.0, w/ KDE 3.0 BTW

To unzil a gzipped tarball(.tar.gz or .tgz file) just type "tar -zxvf filename.tar.gz".
If you wanna do it the long way, first type "gunzip filename.tar.gz" then "tar -xvf filename.tar".

Well.. to provide a pit more information, then 'tar' is your friend. You can zip and unzip with 'unzip' and 'zip', but why use zip when you have much better formats. tgz (tar.gz) is good compressed and faster to uncompress where tar.bz2 is *good* compressed. You can, as said before, use tar -zxvf file.tgz file to uncompress.. you use -zxvf because:

-z: It's a gz file
-x: you wanna extract the files
-v: verbose so you know what's happening
-f: The file that you wanna uncompress..

Or better yet right click on the tarball or zip file that you downloaded and select 'extract here' while in Konqeuror file manager.


P.S. You need to install zip from your CD's because the free version of MDK 9.0 does not install it by default and also you should install the
Open Office help files while your at it beacuse those are not installed either by default even if you installed Open Office. Use the MDK
control panel and go to the MDK package manager and do a search for 'zip and 'Open Office' and install the help files. One last bit of info
EN = English.

P.S.S If you want to install apt-get for MDK 9.0 go here ! Look for a package that starts with the letters 'apt' and download them and install
as root. Once installed go to a terminal and type 'apt-get update' ( <- minus single quotes ) and then 'apt-get -f dist-upgrade'( <- minus single quotes ).
A warning though if you don't have broadband be ready for a very looooooooong wait !! If you have any problems then for more info on the
arguements and options you can use with apt-get type 'man apt-get' at the prompt. After your done updating type 'update-menus' in 'run-command'
which can be found in your KDE menu.

NorthernLove - Why would you install apt-get on Mandrake? It's a great package manager, but Mandrake has a great one already in urpmi. It basically does the exact same thing as apt but works with the official Mandrake ftp mirrors. Plus it comes pre-installed and set up to install packages from the cds when you first install Mandrake 9.0.

Just my $0.02, having used nothing but 'drake for the past 2 years.
