Built my last PC around 2006 I think and no longer keep up with hardware. Did purchase a Gateway netbook a while back and was exposed to the wonders (horrors) of Windows 8.1.

Decided to try a fresh Windows Vista install on my 2006 box last week and after two days of trying and failing, gave up. Went to the local big box store yesterday and bought an off the shelf ASUS desktop. Also ditched my flickering pair of 2005FPWs (circa 2005) for a new-fangled 27" curved monitor from Samsung.

Now that 8.1 has a desktop it's not so bad but dammit if new doesn't usually mean better. Until I get the courage to rip the "warranty void" seal on this thing I'm dealing with awful onboard audio (no bass from my sub on a 2.1 system). Then I try to plug in my MS510 bluetooth mouse and DEAR LORD lag like a sonnofa you know what with the rear USB ports. Decided to stick my dongle up front and think that solved the problem.

If your mouse is lagging like that from the rear, you should return it / exchange it. Indicative of a failing USB port or other underlying MOBO issues.

it's brand new but I hear you. it was two different rear ports though. USB keyboard works fine back there

If it is wireless mouse and if the desktop has a built in wireless card / blue tooth, it may be close enough to cause interference, too; the keyboard probably wouldn't have as noticeable lag as a mouse if it is having issues. If it isn't wireless, then I'd bring it back. New shit is sometimes messed up too

I would just keep an eye on it and test it out with whatever USB items you have lying around. IE: Transferring some files with a flash drive from the front a back should take approximately the same time from the same source (presuming they are on the same USB 2 / 3 standard)

It does have integrated wireless/network card with a fancy antenna that screws in. Some of my searches brought up people with laptops complaining about the wireless and bluetooth fighting so that's likely what it was.

If you can deal with it being in the front then you are good, otherwise your only options are to get a different model, or to get one without a built in wireless card, buy your own, and toss it in the lowermost PCI slot or something. Or, remove it if it is slotted and not soldered.

I'm good with it up front as it's a tiny dongle (tee hee). Still have an open one up front as well. After the new wears off I'll probably crack the thing open to take a look with the hopes of installing my sound card.
