My cousin on the other hand, still hasn't passed it on three tries. Is CA BAR that much harder, or is he just stupid?

CA bar is freaking hard. I know some good attorneys who failed multiple times.
Edit: from Wikipedia, "California administers what is widely considered the nation's most difficult bar examination twice each year, in February and July." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Bar_of_California

I am a CA bar member.
The overall pass rate is low, and the test is unusual in that it is a 3-day bar (most states only have a 2-day test), but it's not especially hard IMO. The main reason the pass rate is so low is that CA doesn't waive in lawyers from other states, so a lot of practicing lawyers from other states try to come in and take the test without doing BARBRI. Also, CA has more non-ABA-accredited law schools than other states, and their pass rate is relatively poor. If memory serves, my school (US-Hastings) had a 95+% pass rate for first-time test takers when I took the bar in 1998.
To the OP - congratulations!

I'm a CA bar member too, and I thought it was really freaking hard. But I have to admit this was just because I had a hard time making myself go back into the test room on the afternoon of the third day. Three full days of testing sucks and I just did not want to do bar exam stuff any more. Seeing as an idiot like me can pass on my first try, it must not be too hard. Kidding aside, you might be right. I've no idea how the CA bar compares to other states.

Honestly I was an unremarkable law student, but on some level I actually enjoyed the bar, because it was the first legal exam I had ever taken that let me answer questions on a kind of glib, simplistic level and still be successful. That, and I have a slightly freakish ability/compulsion to take multiple-choice tests well and quickly, so I found the multistate kind of fun. I took the bar in a gigantic hall in Oakland, and was by far the first person, out of thousands there, to finish each half of the multistate - I finished each 3-hour half of testing in about an hour. I fully admit I'm kind of a weirdo when it comes to these things, though.

Actually I went to the cheapest tier 1 law school in the nation. I only have ~$8500 in loans!
