I root but I don't fiddle.

I'm not sure why the two has to be tied together since I used to run a rooted stock ROM. You don't have be extreme to take advantage of root.

I like to be rooted but I don't like what most roms do to your phone. They add all sorts of ugly themes and other crap that I don't want. Might look good if you've also riced out your car but I'd rather keep everything looking stock and normal.

I finally (accidentally) destroyed my iPhone 3G, so I got the HTC Inspire and I've been reading up on rooting. I honestly can't think of a reason to do it.

I jailbroke my iPhones back in the day when the app store sucked shit, but now there are official apps for just about everything I need.

Ima pass.

i came to android from winmo 6.1, i hacked the hell out of that thing. i enjoyed seeing what i could accomplish with that phone, and it was pretty neat. i did end up back at stock when i had less time to mess with it tho, and now that ive gone to the droidX im trying it stock before i root or ROM it at all. so far i havent felt the need to change it, but that may change at some point.

I root to get rid of all of the crap Verizon puts on my phone. I root to get rid of TouchWiz. I root so that I can use google as my default search instead of bing (I mean...really? wtf? bing?). I root so that I can have voodoo improvements for my phone. I root so that I can change the start up animation. I root to get rid of the annoying "battery full please unplug charger" popup. I root to get to Froyo (still no 2.2 ota for fascinate. really? wtf? - lol). I root to change from RFS to EXT4. I root to use Root Explorer. I root to get rid of that stupid thing that would pop up asking me to install some VZW crapware on my computer when connect my phone via USB. I root so that I can apply themes. I root to increase battery life.

Good enough?

I have the Droid 1 and it's rooted with custom ROM's. I did this for:

1- performance
2- battery life
3- skinning/customizing the layout and such
4- get rid of preloaded uninstallable bloatware

With phones like the TB I think #1 isn't an issue at current. Numbers 2, 3, and 4 still are though IMO

You don't have to root to get rid of TouchWiz, but I agree on some of the other stuff. The battery full popup was annoying - the screen would turn on and the phone vibrated even when set to silent mode. Usually didn't wake me up but it did a couple times.

Don't care about themes or startup animations but that's just personal preference. There are a lot of useful things you can do with rooting.

yes because if you OC your evo the battery goes from 2 hrs to 1 hr. but seriously, android hiccups left and right even at 1.1ghz or whatever.
They have kernels for that you know. Stop acting like you know what you are talking about. EVO's can have great battery life, but not without rooting and changing ROM's.

And I don't have any hiccups at all, and I am still on stock.

Rooting isn't needed if you aren't going to take advantage of it.. That's all there is to it. If you're rooting just because it's there, you're doing it for the wrong reasons.

Custom kernels like other people said for undervolting and increased battery life.

Custom roms which get tweaked for performance. What percentage of phones use stock android anymore? G2, Nexus S, Nexus One.. And only one or two of the upcoming phones. You have the choice of getting Cyanogenmod when you root assuming your phone is supported.

DSP Manager as the sounds/music used to sound like garbage before this.

Tethering may or may not be worth mentioning.. it's there, although I don't use it.. but good as backup if your regular internet connection is out.

What, you don't want free stuff from Amazon?

You can hack in sideloading without permanent root, but it's the simplest way.

I like having it available. I like being able to do anything I want with my phone.

Rooted apps on phone currently:
Titanium Backup
Root Explorer
Wireless Tether
SetCPU
Terminal Emulator
drocap2
Autostarts
Type Fresh

I'm running Bugless Beast 0.6.2.1 with a Sapphire kernel, using compcache, overclocked. Performance is MUCH better than stock. Stable, fast and reliable. No worries about bricking or losing data either.

Will be holding onto this phone until something equivalent comes along.

so you are using a Droid 1?

Of course older phones or janky phones like the Samsungs are going to need help. But now that I've got a phone that works like it should out of the box, I'm over messing with it.

And yes...I've done everything you can do with root. Different ROMs, kernels, recoveries, OC/UV, tearing apart APK's and pushing parts of it....I'm not a rookie.

I'm still pretty impressed and happy with my 1.5 year old Touch Pro 2. Modded or unmodded it works well. I'm pretty amazed Android woeks on it as well as it does, but I still think WM 6.5 is the most useful phone OS.

You know its funny you say that. Having had the Evo for about 9 months now, and having tried prolly 5 or 6 different ROMS, other than the screen size, I think I liked my TP2 better overall. Have actually thought about going back to it.

I got tired of wiping my data and redoing everything so many times. I just stick with one ROM for now until theres a major update.

You don't have to root to get rid of TouchWiz . . .

Yes, you do. A full custom rom is required if you want to completely get rid of it, saving the internal storage space. LP/ADW/Go will cover it up, but not get rid of the files. Other skins, like Blur, will run in the background regardless of whether you have LP/ADW or not. This not only takes up space on the phone, but actively uses memory.

I agree. Everyone talks about Android like it's some magical new OS that's going to rule the world. You know what? I'm extremely happy with WM7. All my apps work great and no stability issues.

If the phone does not work right out of the box then it probably won't after rooting. Rooting or rom moding is more popular among teenagers who needs to feel important of their accomplishments, FFS its just a phone view few webpages, txt and call i still don't get why the need for oc unless you have some MT3g or HTC hero type of phone, the later phones are perfectly usable.

A few scripts won't make your phone better, having said that i just root to get rid of the bloat and use adfree other than that i see it pretty useless, everytime you load a rom you need to restore your phone and that may be your hobby but its damn boring for me. I find it like installing windows over and over again in my computer and whats the fun of that?

Because it's fun? The Droid x is 50 times better with a ROM because of lack of motoblur. It's fun trying out new things and pushing things to their limits. Also, unlike Windows, it takes about 20 seconds to flash a new ROM and another 5 minutes to restore everything else. Why not overclock your phone and have everything feel noticeably faster, while consuming even less power. Stock Droid X gets about a day of charge, my Droid X can get 2.5 days if I push it because it uses an absolutely miniscule amount of power when on standby. If I'm using it all day, it still lasts about 16 hours easy.

Rom's make things lighting fast because it gets rid of stuff, it gets you better battery life, and other improvements. There is no downside to Roms other than some features losses sometimes, but I couldn't care less about many of those features.

Bla bla bla, cynical bullshit from somebody who is SOOOO important that because he doesn't think it's important, it must NOT be.

Everybody else here knows the value, and pitfalls, of loading custom ROMs. You clearly don't. Keep your head in the sand buddy!

Thanks

1. go to xda-developers
2. find your phone's forum, click on themes and apps
3. find and download a theme you like.
4. copy the zip to your phone
5. boot into recovery, install from zip, select file, find the file you downloaded and apply it

lol

ad-free slows your phone down more than anything out there.

Also...you are totally clueless
