...how do I go about acquiring one right now? I mean for now I want to redirect a free page to the name but after I move I'll have my server set up. So how do I go about doing this? Cheap is good. I want to redirect it to my Geocities page for now. Thanks for the help!

www.ifixidevices.com
hopefully where you registered it has domain forwarding...

if not, you can do an automatic forwarding page for the site re-directing it to your geocities page (geocities sucks though)

I know, I know, but I'm moving in a few months and I don't have broadband though. I'll be getting it when I move, so I'll set up a server then. The redirecting thing is just for a couple months. So yah, can anyone give me like tips on what domain register they use and if it's good/cheap and will let me forward it to my Geocities account. Thanks!

A lot of the web hosts will register your domain name for you Host Matters registered mine ($20 in addition to their rates)...I have been very pleased (so far ).

Registering a domain is easy, there's lots of places that will do that. What you need is redirecting services. TZO provides that service, as does Deerfield.com . Redirection.net is a really nice service if that's what you need, they can do "stealth" redirection (which is just redirecting in a frame) or 'regular' redirecting to point to your location of choice.

That's it. My brother tried to register our last name as the domain name ( which is not a common name ) and found out it was already taken by someone with the same last name. Anyway, he emailed her to see if she was going to renew it. She said that she was. I then offered her $250 for it. After a week, she accepted. Anyway, just wanted to share incase someone is using your name already.

heh, i was going to do the same thing. Here's a question, i've heard some of the places that give you the "great deals" for registering acually own your domain, you just have use of it for 2yrs or whatever... is that true? I never really found anything out about it.

Myz.. reg it at Joker.com (that's where i register all of my 10+ and my client's 90+ domains - it's around $10/year). Then PM me for DNS info, i'll give you free redirection until you're up and running.

I registered my domain with Dotster. Then I used mydomain.com to do stealth redirection. Mydomain.com is a free service.

www.domaindirect.com has a great forwarding service, you can specify the IP address that you want to use (great for broadband). They will change your mx (mail) IP manually.

www.register.com is who I would go with. They let you specify your IP for your web page, as well as your MX record (if you want to set-up a mail server).

I have no idea how to setup a mail server or the likes, so I really wouldn't need that. I wouldn't mind learning though. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If I decide to sign up for a domain, when it comes to the DNS screen what do I have to do? I don't have a server setup, so I'm just going to redirect it to my Geocities page. So what do I put in the DNS page?

myz. Honestly it's no hassle. Of the 90 sites i host, around 80 of those are hosted for free with no catch whatsoever (ok, except maybe for the "no illegal/adult stuff allowed&quot. They're no ordinary sites either, i normally scout the net for people who have passion for the 'net - especially in design - and offer them hosting. At one time or the other i've also offered free hosting to student groups, non-profit consumer organizations and kids with disabilities. So no, it's no hassle at all. In fact i enjoy doing it. Gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside

as for pure DNS info, specify the server info of your host and for the A records (if you have access to that) specify the one for your current site. If your current site doesn't have a unique IP assigned to it (and i'm pretty sure it doesn't) then use CNAME records and alias yourdomain.com to your geocities.com addy.
