I will have 400 bux to upgrade a CPU, Motherboard, and Memory.

I want a dual core. I want the best integrated graphics. (Can't afford another video card, but want to upgrade to PCI express later on.))

I have gobs of regular DDR 400 memory. I already have a couple of zaleman / Thermaltake HSFs so cooling won't be an issue.

I havn't really overclocked anything since my celery 300a at 504. (Well, the 5-10% here or there doesn't count.)

Should I go with an 805 or an opteron? Why?

Nothing really. Occasional games, internet. Its my 6th system in the house. Strictly for play / experience / fun. (maybe learn linux?)

I need a MB, Ram, and processor. onboard video is a must really. No need /want to get a PCI / PCI express video for this.

The DFI board is a great motherboad. I have one. If you want a cheaper motherboard and one that has integrated graphics go with a Biostar Tforce 6100 motherboard. Here is a link: Biostar tforce 6100

I like all the suggestions thus far in this topic. If you really must have a motherboard with onboard video then the Biostar TForce is a great choice. I am using the Socket 754 version right now for my Sempron rig and it is a great overclocker.

Only problem is that the OP needs onboard video, and you are wrong that there are no decent mobos with onboard video.

The Biostar Tforce939 is an excellent board that can run an Opteron (and a dual core at that), plus has great overclocking options. My neighbor has an X2 3800+ OC'd to 2.6ghz on one. The onboard Geforce 6100 graphics are among the best you can get, too.

Only consideration is that the board is microATX, so if that poses a problem for you...

*Edit*
This is only for if you decide on getting an Opteron over an 805. The latter would be cheaper, but the former more powerful.

What about the DFI Infinity RS482? It's supposed to be a decent overclocker, it has integrated graphics (x300), it's mATX though, if that's a problem. I'm not sure whether the 6100 or x300 is better.

go with pentium d 805 based system. very very good bang for buck and easy oc because of high multi. probably one of the best performance values on the market right now

Micro ATX is fine. (I an't seem to find a board with integrated graphics that isnt a micro atx.

Are Asus and MSI good boards? Will this work for AMD? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130529

For Intel: http://www.newegg.com/Product/CustRatingReview.asp?Item=N82E16813131590

I have never used / owned a DFI board. Asus, Abit and MSI have neever let me down...

Now, assumeing they are both acceptable for their respective processors, which platform? I can get a 805, that board and a gig of ddr2 for like $350.00

To do the opteron I have to shell out another $100.00. And while I know the opteron will be faster over all (Overclocked vs overclocked, stock vs stock.) But won't the overclocked 805 (I plan on just using the memory at its stock speed of 667 wich should get me to 3.3Ghz.) be faster than the stock opteron?

Go with the biostar tforce 6100 and a 3800 or opty. Why would you want to compare one overclocked to one thats not. That sounds like something toms hardware would do.

if your going to gvie up the intergrated graphics then go with a dfi.

Ok, DFI Epox and ASUS if your ****** onboard gfx board isnt one of those brands you can kiss 2.6-2.8ghz goodbye.

LOL LMAO. Have you ever owned a biostar tforce? It rivals even the best full size boards.

This for the processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116001

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145098

This for the video: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16814130009

It means I have to save up more, but I will have an upgrade path for the future.

Anything wrong with these parts?

Way to much for a video card that offers very little performance.

Memory is ok

Your spending almost $400 on a motherboard and processor. why not pick up a biostar t force and a a64 3000 and you will spend less than $200 and get much better practice overclocking and well have less at risk if you go and tear somthing up. Better yet pick up a cheap sempron.

The video card was just for grins. This current plan allows me to go to core duo when I have more money in the fall.

I have a athlon xp-m 2400 that I am playing with now.

Whats the best vid card for 60 bux?

And I remembered why I pay good money for a good motherboard that will last me a while. (El-cheapo board crapped out on me the other day.) If I could afford the version with the pci-x slot... Oh well maybe some day

well for the amd platform you can get one heck of a motherboard for $60-$70. Whatever floats your boat.
