I was a whistleblower yesterday

I'm sure I pissed the other employees off. I work at a sunglasses store, currently looking for marketing jobs.

The other day I was fed up with workers taking smoke breaks in the back room where the stock and desk is at. They also go into the bathroom and smoke there. The vents from the back will suck up the air and put it into the store so everybody out on the floor can smell this smoke air.

The boss said it is "unprofessional" to smoke out back. So I call the district manager and tell on them. I'm sure I'm public enemy #1 for ratting them out, but since the district manager hates smoking too, she took my side because it really isn't company policy to smoke inside the store. Keep in mind I'm the only employee out of the four others that does not smoke.

So do you think what I did was right?

I'm quitting the place in 2 weeks, I put my notice in today. The main manager is quitting next week and the other guy can't run the store as well. He also plays favorites with this high school girl and lets her come in whenever she wants and leave whenever she wants. I am stuck to close it every time I work...

To give out your colleagues is not necessarily the best option. I'm pretty sure that you always act in accordance with all rules though. If so, you have nothing to worry about, but should you ever make a mistake... but you wouldn't, would you?

Im not a smoker, but I think you should have just STFU and let them smoke outside.

They're smoking inside the store, and in the bathroom in the store. Not outside.

OP should have changed to an all bean and fruit diet and then made it a point to stink up the bathroom horribly every morning...thus making smoking there unbearable.

He did the right thing if they were smoking in the bathroom, that affects everyone. But the OP sounded like he was pissed because they were going outside to smoke.

Op, you really could have handled it better than that. For instance, you could have brought it up in a meeting with your District Manager there, but not pointed out people. Just address it as the smoke issue. Mention that a few customers had complained about smoke in and around the bathroom, and that you wanted to bring it up to figure out a solution. Leave it up to the manager then to decide what to do. Chances are you coworkers will go out of their way to bend over to resolve the situation.

By calling and ratting them out behind their backs, you are now considered the ass of the group.

I think the proper term is rat. You ratted them out, thus you are now wearing the snitch jacket. As a rule of thumb rats can't deal with a situation and must tattle and hope a woman will take thier side and defend said " snitching".

Fck smokers. It's sounds like a short term job, not a career so do whatever it takes. They are probably breaking many fire codes, state smoking laws and company rules. Make them go outside away from the door during their federally mandated breaks, no more than that.

I'm sure the OP left out the part where he has no friends at work and no one likes him. I've never worked anywhere for more than a week without making a few friends. There's no way I would rat on a friend for someting so trivial. Come to think of it I don't think I'd rat on a friend for anything less than some heinous sex crime or something.

IMHO ratting people out is acceptable IF you have first confronted them personally and tried to talk it out. Only then should you go to a higher authority.
