hello guys so i'm thinking of getting a z68+ 2500k for an editing station and not include a dedicated GPU.

reason im getting the Z chipset is because i want to add a dedicated later on when the hd7000 series arrives.

my question is that is the 2500k good enough for video editing?
or is a discrete gpu a must have?

programs to be used:

adobe aftereffects 5.5
premiere pro 5.5 (i know it supports CUDA acceleration)
pro tools 9
PERHAPS?: final cut pro x and 7 (hackintosh)

The i5 2500K should be fined with the softwares you are using unless render faster makes that much different to you.

My Q9650 @4.0ghz is good enough to render with premiere pro 5.5, I suggest you get at least 8gb ram running those softwares.

Adobe is not dependent on the GPU, however you will find the 2600K with hyperthreading will perform somewhat better than the 2500K, if you can fit it into your budget ..

Hyper Threading improved performances on applications that takes advantage of them, render, encoding, server, and etc.. will show improvement.

YES Photoshop in preferences you can select GPU or deselected it OpenGL GPU yes what it does is make things fast,,, like scrolling or performing stuff without autosave on,,

FEAR 3 , I get 36 to 40 CPU usage. Crysis 2maxes it out but still beuatitful and smooth FPS, never goes down,,

HT would be awesome for my DAW right now a project usage is amazingly low for what Im doing. 27 Percent avg. and gaming is stuck never a single DROP vsync pownz , and 4xAA 16X AF highest quality ,,,,, @1080p

FEAR 3 is amazing, Im playing some Crysy 2 lol FEAR 3 pownz it deathmatch is fun always bet against duke hehe slomo 1v1 with a friend.. thx

You don't need a Z series chipset to add on a dedicated graphics card later. EVERY modern motherboard has a PCI-Express slot that you can use to add a graphics card.

I'm assuming he wants to overclock, in which case P series (doesn't support IGP) and H series (doesn't support overclocking) wont work, leaving him with the Z series.

You just listed $5K of software. Spend the $200 for an Nvidia video card.

Edit:

ehhhh i got the ASUA DirectCUII 560ti due to cuda.
in all honesty, i now realize i rendered almost everything with my 2600k anyways and CUDA was only used for drafting which IS STILL WORTH GETTING IT OVER THE 6950 but not as useful as i thought it would be.

but in all honesty, get the 560 ti and if i were you get the DirectCUII and OC it, it got me to NEAR 570 speeds (1-2% difference at that point)

So two months ago you had a 2600k and a 560ti.
