Well, just returning to this thread for curiosity sake.
OP didn't say what heatsink he was using. I had even assumed it was a "stock" Intel sink, but no such thing is bundled with a Skylake K processor. The picture tells it all. That sink is totally inadequate for the processor.
Hyper 212 EVO is adequate, and another member had posted an overclock of an i5-6600K to 4.5 Ghz with that cooler. Personally, even for such a clock setting, I'd want something better.
I'll discount any possibility that any thermal damage occurred: the processor is supposed to throttle when it reaches ~ 100C to protect itself. This should be a learning experience for the OP. He seems to have enthusiasm for getting things fixed. So -- welcome to a forum of enthusiasts!
For the 6700K, I still recommend either the ThermalRight LG Macho or the NH-D15, but other coolers may have been released to the market since last year. If you're not going to overclock the CPU, the 212 EVO is still a good choice, but like I said -- that gives you a certain amount of overclocking headroom anyway.
And now I've read EpicSurvivor's last post about the motherboard replacement. This seems to be going in the right direction, hey?
