1. What is the normal temp for stock speeds (i7 920)?

2. What temperature measurement program should I be using?

3. What would be a good temperature to aim for for 24/7 use after overclocking?

4. Anyone has a good i7 overclocking guide ? (Extra points for Gigabyte's UD3r motherboard )

Thanks !

1: depends on the cooler and ambient temps

2: real temp?

3: depends on ambients, cooler, etc.

4: search?

Can I have a range or something. Say if temp is 25C you could expect XXC

2: real temp?
Perfect, I just downloaded Core Temp and Real Temp. I am on the right path then.

3: depends on ambients, cooler, etc.
Same as 1.

4: search?
That is the first thing I did, and that is why I am asking questions here. I have not found anything good enough and thought maybe my fellow forumers could help me.

Hey Relion

1. I've seen reported: Idle 30-50+ Load 50-85+!
This really won't help you much, it's like Gillbot says

2. Real Temp

3. Pretty much what Gillbot said, but maybe I can expand: some people are comfortable at 80  others won't go over 55. I have mine 24/7 under load so I am not comfortable over 70.
i7 920 D0 3.8GHz 1.19volts

4. I haven't been real happy with any guide, so I have been feeling my way and reading the forum for tidbits here and there.

I will add that my mobo (Asus P6T Deluxe V2) will increase core volt as you increase BCLK if you don't put in a setting, kind of surprised me. I have been trying to see how high I can go with low volt to keep temps down.

my experience comparing i7-950 to q9650, at stock (3 ghz), both run approximately 10 degrees above ambient during typical computing. i7 may be as much as 2 degrees cooler but why quibble. up near 4 ghz both run about 14-15 above ambient, with i7 needing .06 fewer volts. (not nessessarily stable but sufficient to surf and email without bsod) During prime95 runs, i7 is anywhere from 8-10 degrees higher going to the high 60's. as measured by coretemp and a TR ultra exrtreme. fwiw, i generally overclock at a leasurely pace and modestly high. i ended with my q9650 steady at 3750 and for the most part remain at stock with i7 3 months in, though have been up to 4.4 ghz. guess i'll shot for a toasty 20 above ambient for the months of december and january, idle.

Thank you for your answers ! I think something is wrong with my i7, at around 25C ambient I am getting 50-53C idle. Ill try re-seating the HS tomorrow and reapplying thermal paste.

Edit: That is without overclocking

I might be off, maybe I should say Idle 40-55+

Check temp under load before re-seating, it might not go up all that much and you want to know for comparison anyway.

Use CPU-Z to check Core Voltage default, then test temps with 0.05 or even 0.1 less volts to see how much it affects your temps.

Your not alone. I'm at the same idle temps on my rig below. Using oem fan with bolt-down kit and intel pins cut off. Tried reseating.....same temps. I ordered a new HSF......Rev c .

I re oriented and reseated my HS. Cleared the cabling (it was a mess) and added a second frontal fan. Temps dropped 13C (and it was a very hot day)
Overclocked to 3.4 and after some minutes of Priming it is not reaching 65C. Thanks all for the feedback and help !
