IBM 75 GXP - Best drive?

many months ago, I got a DLTA-307045 drive(45gig), it was the fastest at the time. I havnt been able to find anything else much faster and I want to raid 0 the drive I have now, so Im looking to get another one. should I get the same one, or are there better performing ones now for around the same price? I have had a really hard time finding this drive, does anyone know where to get one, the cheapest I can find is $140 or so..

I would stay away from this drive...it has given many customers many, many problems. Others would suggest that you stay away from this drive too. I just ordered a 60GB Seagate Barracuda IV from Newegg for $139 shipped. The reviews for the drive are pretty good, saying that it is ultra quiet, and Seagate has been known to be reliable. Good luck in your hard drive search.

The IBM 75GXP has a design flaw in it which causes many larger capacity 75GXP's to fail... IBM has acknowledged this flaw corrected this problem with the 60GXP series HD... 75GXP's are no longer on sale, because they have all been replaced with the 60GXPs... The 60GXP's have been very reliable and do not have an abnormally high failure rate like the 75GXP's...

I personally have a 60GXP and it has been running great for me...

are there any new benchmarks compairing the two or any new drives for that matter? I thought that the 75GXP was better than the 60GXP, performance wise at least. I havent had any issues with my drive.

I think they're great when they work, but a majority of the time they don't. I've seen some reviews where the 75GXP was ranked really high (sorry, can't remember where I saw it from). But I would go with BCYL, and get a 60GXP drive if you do decide to get an IBM drive. They go for around $140 shipped.

From my person experience, I'll never buy another IBM drive again.

My 40Gb IBM drive died without warning nearly five weeks ago and I've still not recieved a replacement. Their customer service is a joke.

IBM customer service is top notch, I always used the advanced replacement method and received in 2 days.

well, I went for the 60GB 60GXP. it was only like $30 more than the 40 gig, so what the hey. now, is the performance of this dirve the same as the older drives? how does it compare to new drives, does anyon know? thanx for the advice.

Perhaps the US has a better IBM customer service department than we do here in the UK - we certainly don't get the option of an advanced replacement. If that is the case IBM should sort out its RMA department - we should get the same treatment and service as US customers.

You make it sound like England is some strange, out of the way place! Get real!

I think that the 75GXP was one of those drives that if it doesn't click+die in the first few weeks then you are set with a really good, reliable drive. I have the 30gb drive and I have never had a problem, it's visibly quicker than my seagate. I say try a 60GX and it does fail, which is less likely than the old IBM drive, then you get a replacement!, just ensure u backup your data

Anyway, The problem with IBM customer service is that they DON'T have a UK support office - any returns have to go through the Netherlands and thats where the problems start. Customer Service from most UK based IT companies is A+ in my experience.

But, I gotta agree with you with one point - the UK is certainly a mighty country!

IBM has a class action suit against them for not disclosing known defects with this drive. I have four of them and have had to re-partition them all about twice a year. Don't bother.

I'll tell you what a really great drive is, but you probably won't believe me because it's a 5400 RPM drive.

[below is a cut and paste of my review at sysopt.com for the Western Digital WD600ABRTL (60 Gig 5400 RPM) - didn't see the point in retyping it]

I got this drive at a BestBuy day after Thanksgiving sale for $49.95 after the rebates. I wasn't too thrilled about the 5400RPM, but I just couldn't pass up 60Gig of storage for $50, and it was the leader of the 5400 RPM class at storagereview.com so I nabbed it and felt good about the purchase.

I put it in my wife's system as a second drive, but after her IBM 75GXP 7200 ATA100 starting up again (big surprise, huh, another IBM 75GXP giving someone problems!), I installed Windows to her new WD600ABRTL.

Man! Windows installed in about 10 minutes, literally! I couldn't believe it, it was so fast! It did the "copying files" part of the Win98 install in about 3-4 minutes.

Don't let the 5400 RPM fool you. This drive is extremely fast. I am very please with it and would recommend it to anyone.

I only wish I had put it in my system, cause hers is faster than mine now even though my chip is running at about 100MHz more.

I think the $50 is a Man Fac rebate. You can get the drive for about $100 on pricewatch, so if the $50 is still in effect that would make it about $50. I know you'll probably think "I don't want a 5400 RPM drive", and maybe the 60GXP is superior, but I'm telling you that the drive is very, very fast.

IBM customer support is a joke....they have no way of talking to the RMA department except through e-mail.....I RMA'd my 75gxp(30gig) and got back a 60gxp which was fvcked up when I finally received it (after 2 weeks of looking for the lost hdd in the mail)...so I had to send it back......I spent 2 months without my normal hdd......I'm getting a maxtor next time.

There is a class action lawsuit concerning these drives through a firm in Philly I beleive.!

They have a site concerning this issue!
