IBM or Maxtor HD???

Well, a few months ago i had made up my mind about getting an IMB 75GXP IDE HD to act as my back-up drive. But ever since all these reports of dying drives with no warning starting poping up, ive been second guessing my choice. My current drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax 60+. I've had some issues with it, that ive dissucssed in other threads, but we wont get into that. Nothing serious.

I need some feedback guys. which one would you suggest? The only IBM drives i can get my hands on at the moment are from the 75GXP series

Are the IBM problems of large concern? Isolated incidents? Or should i really be concerned about becoming part of that alarmingly growing "statistic"?

My 75GXP (30.7GB) worked like a charm, and I never had a problem with it. I'm using a 40GB Maxtor DiamondPlus 60 right now and all I can say is that this is a great drive too.

Basically, I've had nothing but positive experiences with both drives. I'll vouch positively for either one. If you don't want to get a 75GXP because of all the recent troubles then go with the Maxtor. Great drive!

I prefer the 60GXP series, but if you can`t get them then go with the Maxtor, there really is not much difference, both are the top 2 brands IMHO.

Careful...Yor preference is a few month old , un-proven as of yet, replacement, that was brought out to replace the GXP75 because of its failure rate. I'm already reading about problems with the 60 ?????

Maxtor seems pretty good... All IDE are wishy washy

I just got a Maxtor DiamondMax 60+, and it works fine for me. Very fast, at least after having lived with an older computer before this.

I have a maxtor 6800+, 20 gig, 7200 rpm, 2 meg cache. Drive is 2 years old, overclocked for half of it's life and still works great.

i'd say get a 60gxp... they are cheap ($113 for 40 gigs on pricewatch), and they are newer than the 75gxp, so i'm guessing you'll have no problem with drive failures.... any drive can fail, though, no matter what its record is. until late, i thought ibm's had a pretty good reliability record, i'd still go with them b/c of their generally good record and quality (and price!).

my friends gave IMB deskstar series drives and they are pretty good quality and fast too. the maxtor larger capacities have had some problems i heard like the 80gig conking out, slow too, only 5400 RPM. but hey, im not sure. i myself am loking a the 40 gig IBM deskstar.

Both are good drive makers. Benchmarking puts the IBM slightly faster than the equivalent Maxtors, but the 75's have been screwy so get the 60's. I'm currently running a RAID array with Maxtors and they are quiet and fast.

IMO, they're both pretty much equal. The 60GXP is a little faster, but less people seem to have Maxtor DM+60 drives go bad, and Maxtor offers advanced RMA. I'd just get the cheapest.
