IBM vs Seagate Hard Drive

i've always been a loyal ibm fan. but should i get the ibm 60gxp 40 gig ($89) or Seagate Barracuda IV 40 gig ($87). Both are ata100 and both are 7200rpm as well. thanks for any advice.

I would select the Seagate I have two of them and they are quiet and "Look" well built.

Also until IBM fixes the problems its having with its drives failing I would be leary of them but thats my own opinion.

Eh?... I never hear my 60GXP's. The reliability of IBM is debatable (though, IMO, fine apart from the 75GXP's), but one thing they are known for is the low noise level. I haven't run a Seagate drive recently, but I have a hard time believing they're a *hell of a lot* quieter.

I have a Barracuda IV as well as two 75GXPs. The GXP series performance is supposedly better, but not by much. As far as sound I think the Barracuda is more quiet than my IBMs (no noise vs very little noise).

My Seagates are quieter then my IBM 15 Gig 75GXP Well actually the 15 gig IBM just croaked so its really quiet now

The Seagates have noise dampening material and have the new fluid bearings.

I've owned Seagate, IBM, Maxtor, and Western Digital. The one that gave me the most problems was the Western Digital, before it toppled over and died.

Tossed a seagate barracuda IV in my machine and love it. So silent. Makes my 80mm case fan the loudest thing in my case.

Same situation here. I love my Seagate drive. Quiet and reliable.

I recently installed two Barracuda IV 40GB in two separate rigs and I have to say they are some nice drives, very quiet. Like everyone else i am staying away from IBM right now.

When they say "hell of a lot quieter", they meant it, seriously. It's no joke, the Seagate Barracuda IVs blow away any 7200rpm hard drive out there in terms of acoustic. If you haven't heard a CudaIV, dont even bother to make an arguement. I once tried to make it seek and hear how loud it is, and I have to literally put my ear ON it to notice the noise. But of course, they arent the greatest performers in the world, but they'll definitely satisfy anyone who desires a quiet computer. Did I also mention they're the coolest looking hard drives out there?

Fliers?? I dont consider my Cuda4 a flier when it trails my D740X by like 4ms in access times, it's pretty good in transfer rates, which makes it a good storage drive.

I'm for Seagate as well. Very reliable and well performing HD's. Another great thing is that they're quiet little mofos.

LXi and others are right: barracuda IV is noticeably quieter that 60GXP. I just recently got barracuda as exchange for dead 60GXP. Also, barracuda's seek times are higher than others and write speed isn't very good but it's very fast in sequential read. Good drive for streaming applications, IMO.

I just read that the Seagate drives are slow in a RAID configuration. The Seagate apparently is so fast that the RAID controller can't buffer the data quickly enough and so the disk has to read everything twice and hence runs much slower. Anyone experience this?

Yeah, take a serious look at Maxtors. I just ordered me one of these from Newegg.

Just what I was going to ask. Is the Seagate even quieter than the Maxtor?

On the IBM subject I have one 75GXP (the infamous 45 gig model, no less) and it is still going fine, and I've built four systems with the 40 gig 60GXP models and they all worked great. However, if the Seagate is really that quiet, it sure is tempting...
