there seems to be a lot more buzz about ibooks.

why would I want to pay a few hundred $$ more for a powerbook?

Because the ibooks are shoddy and flimsy, at least the 12" one we got at work recently was.

The keyboad on the Powerbook is a lot better. I upgraded from a 12" iBook to a 17" Powerbook.

the difference? very very little

recently the ibook line has been catching up to the powerbooks because of the wall apple has hit with its mobile parts...

/thread

edit: for the money you get a better gpu, firewire, second monitor support & some other stuff...

Performance wise not a whole lot but the Powerbook series are built like tanks, have more ports and simply look more elegant although the iBooks are very nice looking themselves, much better looking than any PC notebook. Either way you can't go wrong as you're getting something that runs MacOS and not Windoze.

Look at the hardware specs between two comparable models (12" iBook and 12" PowerBook). When I bought mine, I chose it over the similar iBook because:

1. More HD space
2. Faster processor
3. More VRAM
4. Audio/Line In
5. Built-in bluetooth

et cedera, et cedera. Nowadays, I'm sure these differences mean little to most people, but I needed the extra VRAM when I bought it, so I'm glad I did. I like the Aluminum casing much more over the white iBook (looks more professional, in my opinion). Aestethics are far from the reason why I decided PB over iBook, though. Just depends what you need.

I bought mine about a year ago, though. I recommend AppleCare or Safeware insurance as well.

Agreed. The iBooks just got an update which puts them close to the powerbook.
I bought a powerbook about 2 months ago and have NO regrets. Check www.macrumors.com ; they seem to think the powerbooks will get a boost in september maybe after a conference. But dont trust rumors.
