I enjoyed watching the series. At the very tail end of the season finale they showed a small clip of Season 2. So it is already in the works.

Are they at least covering the history of Alaska while the show is on?

didn't you know? History channel has become the new Discovery Channel....

Isn't Newfoundland on the other side of Canada from Yellowknife?

Let's see:

1) Getting on and off the ice is extremely tricky
2) You have to judge where other trucks are as the waves interacting can break the ice
3) As the season starts/ends the ice is very fragile
4) If you get in any kind of accident where the cab is breached and the heater does not work you will likely die
5) You often have essentially no visibility
6) The roads can become covered over
7) pits/cracks develop in the ice that can cause you to wreck
8) You have to balance the size/weight distribution of the load with your speed and weather conditions
9) Any breakdown (and they happen often) usually has to be fixed by you without anyone's help.
10) All this has to be done while it is really fvcking cold.

Yeah, no skill involved at all...

Edit: Damnit, did not notice the OP date.

Most of the truckers are not from Yellowknife. I'm not saying they are from Newfoundland...but few of them are actually from Yellowknife.

The trucker with the most obvious accent was from there, IIRC. He works for Diavik in the offseason . . . hmm . . . can't remember his name. I thought most of the guys were from Western Canada except for that one who got suspended for speeding.

Alex is the one you are thinking of i think. He's also been doing it for...what was it...15 years or something? I dunno. I know one of the guys was from the US. I guess i don't really remember where most of the others are...but I wasn't saying they weren't from Western Canada...i was saying most weren't from Yellowknife.

No, it wasn't Alex, he was an older guy, but yeah he's from there. The one I was thinking of was the young guy who specialized in oversized loads.

None of the truckers were from the US, it's illegal for non-Canadians to drive the ice roads. I checked for my father-in-law.

That guy definitely drove in the US, though I'm thinking it was on the east coast. But yea maybe he is a Canadian citizen.

Theres a lot of Newfies that are truckers. My neighbor did this for a season, speed limit is supposed to be about 60 km on a good day, they usually do 80-100 during those days.
