I would have reported it. People are assholes unless proven innocent and you definitely did nothing wrong so why get jerked around? She needs to learn how to deal with the messes she creates, so I'd file the claim and be done with it.

zanejohnson clearly still doesn't understand that you have to take responsibility for your actions. She caused her own mess, by breaking the law. I think Sammy said it best.....

I don't get it... How are you going to make her (mother's) insurance company pay for it? You don't have her last name, license number, or even her phone number. Or did she give you that stuff? It doesn't seem to say in your updated OP.

Also, will her mother's insurance company cover the actions of an unlicensed driver driving illegally? Don't they have a condition that they only cover licensed drivers?

Seems to me it's your insurance co. that will end up paying for it, and then you'll try your luck getting the deductible from her.

I can't believe some of you are telling this guy to give her a break. Why should she get special treatment? This is the problem with kids now. They feel like they have no consequence for their actions and plenty of you are making that clear in your responses. If she can not afford to pay for damages she makes she shouldn't be driving. DRIVING IS NOT A RIGHT. Just because she fessed up doesn't mean this guy should take a risk of getting screwed. How about she pay up for what she did with no risk to this guy who did nothing but legally park his vehicle.

WTF people?

Oh yeah, GET OFF MY LAWN!

what the fuck, you're turning this into a kids are spoiled post? What if she was 40? People do try and pay without insurance, it's not an uncommon occurance.

Just how the fuck do you hit someones car backing out like that? You would have to damn near be turning the wheel before you even half-way out not to mention you should notice the second your car touch's the others. If she's almost 20 and sucks this bad at driving to this point she deserves to be fucked over by the insurance company, maybe it'll teach her a lesson on how-to actually drive.

Granted I'm only 19 but just how hard is it for people to learn to drive? I have zero tickets and zero accidents from my learners permit all the way up until now. Now, I've almost been hit at least three times that I recall, twice while on the highway and people creeping over into my lane, and another while driving home from work late at night and the guy in front of me driving drunk (I know this because he ran into a telephone pole while I was on my cellphone calling the cops); that was a fun night. Now during my time of driving the closest I've come to causing an accident was one my way to work during an ice storm last winter and spun out on an icy patch on a left hand turn, but the vehicle spun out in a way that the vehicle spun into the lane I was trying to turn into.

I mean it's not rocket science to drive & park correctly.

She's not 40 and hopefully it will be a good life lesson.

I'm sure your mommy told you that you are the greatest thing ever and you can never do any wrong. It's all someone else's fault.

Her company IS my company, it's a semi-government run company that does the licensing, and insurance for the entire province. When I mentioned that this girl had her road test scheduled next week, the claims rep commented that she'd be able to look up the scheduled tests for anybody named Ashley, and possibly work from there. Also, since I last updated, they've tried calling the number again, which now seems to have been changed and is giving a "Not a working number..." error. So the insurance company on their own has contacted the local PD to track down the new number and the owners of the number, as it's obvious to them that she has no intention of dealing with this. We have the letter with her name/number on it to provide them, and they'll send an officer out to look at their car to confirm the damage is consistant, and likely we'll get our deductible waived.

As I was saying earlier, if she could've paid the deductible up front, fine, we could've worked with that. Or if she had simply owned up and contacted insurance on her own and reported it, great. Maybe she would've had to wait a little longer, but now she's to the point where it's a hit and run, and she's actively trying to hide any evidence of it, and that's going to get her into dangerous waters with both the insurance company and the police.

If she was smart, and it seems like she's not stupid, Ashley isn't her real name, the phone number she gave was a pre-paid phone, and by now any physical evidence that her car has been in an accident is gone. Yes, I've been scammed like this before. It sucks, but unfortunately there isn't much that can be done, short of you launching a massive investigation which would cost way more than just fixing the damage.

If you're going to go through the trouble of writing a note, getting a prepaid phone, and all that, why even bother in the first place? There were no witnesses, no cameras, it's in the back parking lot of our building, she could've just driven off, and we would've never known.

I believe that her name is Ashley, she signed it as she would've a check so she's obviously practiced it before, and I'm betting the cellphone number is legit. I'm sure she had every good intention of trying to get out of this with minimal trouble, but unfortunately that all went out the window when she had nothing to offer and then refused to own up.

Either way on Monday we go in for the estimate, we'll find out then more info.

Her life lesson: never leave any more notes.

Sucks, but thats what is going to happen.

To OP:
Holy crap, that is some damage from just backing out.

Neg, just not much to update. Had the car looked at by insurance on Monday, came back with an estimate of $1700-ish for a full replacement of the sheet metal and painting, plus labor and taxes and all that. Obviously we still just pay the deductible of $300, and at any point in the future if we find her they'll re-open the case and we get the money back. We're still waiting to hear from the cops, but aren't holding our breath. She definitely changed her number though, I'm trying to track down someone who works for the cell provider to see if I can obtain some information

I would have strung her along for a while to extract more contact info. "OK, I think I can work with you on this to help you out, but in order for me to trust you, I need to at least know your full name and address."

Then take it straight to the insurance company and police.

We tried, she was very clear that she couldn't pay us anything for a few months. We also tried to get her to come over and meet us, she wouldn't do that either.

Didn't want anyone to think I Goosed them, even though not much has happened. Cops haven't gotten back to us, either taking their sweet time or haven't found anything, we'll probably contact them in a few days to see what's been happening. The body shop we use for these types of issues (scratches and minor dents) has ordered the parts and won't have them until early May, so we're just kind of chilling for now. We've asked around a little bit, being very quiet about it though, trying to see if we know anyone who knows anyone who's heard anything, the whole 6-degrees kind of thing, just seeing if we can find out any new info. She would've had to have told her friends about it, and I'm sure they've mentioned it, and this isn't a huge town so we might know some of the same people.

Obviously, if we do find out anything interesting, I'll be sure to update it promptly, unlike some douchebags. Otherwise I'll simply post pics of the new panel once it's on the car in a few weeks and move on with my $300 poorer life.
