Thread title should be "Idiot Race Organizers". Seems like nobody knew where the finish line was, and yeah, I don't blame the first guy from stopping. That sure looked like a finish line on the road there.

Yeah the vid and audio suck, but that's our NBC affiliate for you...

As far as the finish line mislabeling goes, don't most "big deal" races have a buncha fanfare at the end?!

Maybe I'm biased and I know the end is a bigger deal than a sign stating that they made it..

Funny still.

No. That pad he ran over, in professional races, is at the finish line. They move it back for small time races so that they can announce your name. So the setup was more amateur than the runners are probably accustomed to.

Then again, if you flew from Kenya to run in the "BIX" I'm not sure what you were expecting?

Strange, it looked like the chip timer pad was back there. I may have stopped as well.

This reminds me of a run I did a year ago. It was a 10K run, but it was so poorly organized they didn't have proper markings at the turnaround point (it was supposed to be 5K out, then 5K back) so a bunch of us, in the front group, ended up running 14K. I was so tired by the end because I'd been running a 10K pace, plus when they showed the rankings across the country my time looked so weak because I'd ran longer .

After that I've always tried to stick with races that have decent organizing committees.

I'm sorry that is just hilarious. Would you still be running if something hadn't turned you around?

Lol yeah, it's funny now, but wasn't then. Fortunately we kind of ran out of real estate due to construction (yay olympics!) so we just ended up turning around, plus we knew we were supposed to turn at some point and it felt as if we had gone pretty far. Fortunately there was free food and drink at the end, so I gorged myself.

Heh, I did a 100 mile charity bike ride a few years back. The people who were supposed to be at the 50 mile turn around point got lost. (they were on route 19, the turn around was on route 19A or vice versa) - it really sucked for us. We didn't see a single race organizer from 25 miles on. Given the complete lack of organizers, we stopped about 5 miles after we were probably supposed to turn around, got a map, and plotted a new route back that didn't take back winding country roads where houses were 3 miles apart. Total distance was around 110 miles, but the last half of it was a much easier route. Around 75-80 miles, a state trooper found us & relayed information back to the race of where we were at, our new route, etc.

Trust me, you are. I've ran three marathons, there's no mistaking the finish line. Even in a small marathon.

I was at the race working with the elite athlete coordinator and race director all weekend. I talked with both of them privately about the situation and we all (I am an elite athlete myself) agreed that this is athlete's error. I'll tell you this, when there is even so much as $100 on the line, I will know every inch of the course. It is being responsible on the athlete's part. That said, the Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes are notorious for skipping out on mandatory "technical meetings" that discuss things like "The first line you cross is not the real finish, it is from an old marking." Can you guess if either of the first 2 was at the tech meeting?

I'd like to clarify that this was not a marathon. It was a 7 mile race.
