Oh but with tabbed browsing you can do both. I still have other windows opened so I can google and things while reading forums but I keep all the forum's threads I open in tabs in the same window so I don't get them all mixed together. Thats powersurfing.

anyway, once you get the plugins installed it really is much better. if you give it a chance it'll grow on you.

Ain't that the truth. I gave it a fair fight to take over IE as my primary browser. It's not as GREAT as everyone makes it out to be. So wow, something finally caught up to IE and added a few more on top of it. How long did it actually take them ? Maybe in a few years when they come up with ideas on their own. Loading pages quicker than IE by milliseconds is a nice accomplishment though... I never thought it could be done.

And BTW, tabbed browsing is still slower than alt-tabbing to new windows. I don't get the hype and I certainly don't get why people put down IE while doing it. Oh wait, I do.

what do you mean finally? They don't have a multi-billion dollar company backing them so I think it's a great accomplishment.
Ideas of their own? I don't know who thought of this stuff up first, but as you can see by all the other threads in this post they do have some features that IE doesn't have. I use "find as you type" A LOT since I hate taking my hands off the keyboard when using my laptop. The google bar (ctrl-k, hotkey) also. The automatic downloading feature I don't think I can live without anymore. Custom sytlesheets are also a big plus.

Reasons I like FireFox over IE:

Flash Click-to play (invaluable for stopping those damn annoying flash ads)
Block Images from <host> on right-click menu
Built in google toolbar
Built-in themes
Doesn't automatically install plugins (some people look at this as a bad thing, but i prefer it)
Bookmarks Manager is 10x better than IE
Customizable through plugins (IE has some little add-on programs, but nowhere near as many as Firefox)
No activex exploits
No more slow-loading pages
tabbed browsing
built in popup blocking software

I could keep going on and on I suppose, but I'm not going to convert anyone so why bother. Keep using IE if thats what suits you, but if you haven't taken the time to really give Firefox a try I suggest you do. Also, download the flash click-to-play plugin. Once you use it you won't want to do without it anymore.

How on earth can you call a browser which can ONLY load new windows, and even then in the foreground... better? I had to use IE the other day at school and I felt disabled. Stuff gets all over the place, all your browser windows are different sizes... with Firebird, I just have to resize the one and have it done with.

Middle click loads a tab in the background to read later. The closest thing IE has is shift-click, which is inconvenient and kind of useless. Plus, the dozens and dozens of incredible extensions mean that if you have a problem with the browser, chances are you or someone else can fix it for you. Good luck waiting on Microsoft to fix your gripes

I used to have Opera and Mozilla both installed, but always used IE instead of them. Finally I tried Firebird, and haven't used IE for 6 months. And don't give me this stuff about the GoogleBar fixing IE's problems - it's the same as any other annoying popup blocker. If it has to block them at all, it's too late - it's already used my bandwidth and time. If you insist on using IE, at the very least use Proxomitron to correct some of the asinine problems IE has.

By the way, last time I cleared my IE cache - which I had to do by manually deleting dozens of hidden folders - I gained about 2 gigs of space. Firebird uses the 100 megs I set it, and caches images only because I told it to. I used to press shift-refresh about fifty times a session in IE

I could go on, but it's beating a dead horse.

How is CTRL tabbing or right click and pick tab slower than ALT tabbing?

Oh yeah, I like how I can just middle click on the tab bar to reopen any tabs I closed. For IE I would have to open a new window and find the link again.

My forward and back buttons are missing in firefox for some reason, and it doesnt open links sometimes unless I right click on them and open in a new tab. So I'm back to Firebird now.

Talk about easy. Install the Tabscroller extension for firefox and all you have to do is hold down the right mouse button and you can scroll through all your tabs. IT ROCKS .

i used to be a propent of Alternative browers..even the heralded Opera

I had problems with plugins... and especially pages not displaying correctly...that posed a huge problem

however, there is ZERO problem with firefox. so between that and ie, i see no reason why i should use IE...

plus it pairs up nicely with Thunderbox mail which has a KILLER built-in smart spam filter. even tho i loved Outlook Express... i had to use a 3rd party filter and it wasnt as good

that happened to me to (back/foward buttons) on first install of firefox. Just change your theme back to the default, and then back again if you wish, and they'll caome back.

to mention some of the advantages... sure it doesnt open instantaneously but it is not imbedded into windows like IE...

also as far as the privacy and some pages not displaying correctly... IT IS IN BETA VERSION 0.8 ... IE is in its 6th generation... need i say more? just u wait for release 1.0 and it will smoke everything out there

Most definately. I have been using Firebird for like 5 months and I did an Adaware and Spybot scan the other day. You know hoe many things Adaware found? 8! And they were cookies that I knew about! Using IE, I would accumulate around 50-100 adware files over a month or two.

I checked adaware this week, prepatory to installing some hardware, for the first time in 6 months, and guess how many instances of spyware i found???

10... ten... dix... that's it, that's all...

I have no problem with other browsers, and use Opera at work... but it's no better or worse.

Some of you are saying that FireFox is faster at rendering pages?

I'm finding it's actually slower. Especially on heavy javascript pages and these forums.

Plus it breaks a lot of javascript that works fine in IE.
