win xp, ie6 all of the sudden some web pages show up as html code instead of viewing the page I see code or sometimes just a header like at the top of this page right now is this:
Content-type: text/html Page-Completion-Status: Normal Page-Completion-Status: Normal Page-Completion-Status: Normal

If I hit the back button I'll see a screen full of html code. How can I fix this. I haven't changed any settings that I can remember.

try and re-set everything to default settings

This is how you "re-set everything to default settings"

Tools > Internet Options
Security Tab - click "default level"
Programs Tab - click "Reset Web Settings"
Advanced Tab - click "Restore Defaults"

If that doesn't work, try repairing Internet Explorer

Try either repairing internet explorer, or reverting it back to it's original installation. Try the repair first. If that doesn't work, try the revert, then update IE again.

make sure IE is closed when you do it...

This works for the following Windows versions (as long as Internet Explorer has been updated at some point):
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows NT
Windows 2000 (any)
Note: This fix does NOT currently work with WindowsXP (home/pro) with the default install of IE6.0.

Repair
1) open the Control Panel
2) open Add/Remove Programs
3) find "Microsoft Internet Explorer x.x and internet tools" and highlight it
4) click add/remove and choose "repair internet explorer" from the list and click <ok>
5) click <ok> on the next window as well and let the computer reboot itself when the process finishes.

Revert
same process as above, through step 3
instead of choosing "repair" from the list, choose "revert" and let it do it's thing, clicking <ok> when the computer asks you to reboot.

When you're finished with the Reverting process, updating internet explorer again.
