dag, i lost my mp3 collection not too logn ago. i could have told you my favorite hiphop songs.

freestyle is a skill in which an MC raps off the top of his head to a beat without ANY rehersal. a true MC can get on people, tell a story, or just wild out without any mistakes

here is what i remember as far as songs go:

HipHop - Dead Prez (their entire album is nice)
Black Jesus - GhostFace
Betrayal - Gangstarr (Moment of Truth is a NICE album)

As for southern groups, you got Outkast and nobody has even mentioned Goodie Mob - very very similar in sound to Outkast, with much collaboration between them.

I didn't like the roots too much, and I didn't like mosdef's blackstar album all that much. the new mosdef black on both sides is sweet though.
