I'm getting cable today!

OMG, finally OOL ( optimum online ) has made it to my town - it took them, oh, only 2 freakishly long years, but that doesn't matter, it's here to stay. On top off that it seems like OOL has one of the best ( read: fastest ) cable services in US . I feel like a kid during X-mass...gonna pick up my sharkfin ( 3com ) modem at 11am and although I'm sure I'm gonna run into a problem or two while setting up the LAN, I should be broadbanded (word?) just in time to watch the and of the Jets game.

Yep, had my ADSL for just about a month now and I don't think I could EVER go back to 56k connection What speeds does your cable offer then?

I waited two months for DSL only to finally get cable.

Have been very pleased. Have three to four 'puters on the LAN at any given time. It rocks and I could never go back to modem land.

I can truly say that I never wanted to go back. I had cable for about 6 months at my old apartment. Then I bought a house and moved. I am too far away for cable or dsl. It truly does suck going from broadband back to 56k. They are beta testing cable in my area. I hope it is ready soon...

hehe, i know, i had ethernet at school for 4 years and currently i have ethernet at work...man, it's been hard coming back home and connecting via 56K ( assuming I could establish a connection as Bell Atlatic's a.k.a Verizon's service during peak hours was less than acceptable ), but hopefully that's behind me. Ok off I go to pick up the modem...

I have been on cable for almost 2 years now. You will love it. If you are not using Windows ME make sure you get the speed tweaks form either DSLReports.com or from Speedguide.net

speedguide didnt help me much. use dsl reports, they have those nifty java script that tells you if u are in optimum settings. i've had 1.5mb/s download and i was happy but after the tweaks i get 3mb/s download and now im happier. (ppl that dont know difference between 1mb/s and 1mB/s should not even make a comment.)

I've had cable with MediaOne/AT&T/RoadRunner for about a year and a half and it is the best thing since pork rinds. I would NEVER go back to POTS-hell. You're going to love it. What kind of speed does your cable company spec?

I love my cable modem service. Using RoadRunner and it's faster than my friends DSL at the same price.

I use Optimum Online when I'm at home, where do you live? Where I was in Nassau County, it would get EXTREMELY SLOW around 6p-10p and also about once a week the cable would just go out for about 1-2 hours. This usually happened around 11pm. Anyway just letting you know my experience with it, good luck to you!

It`s only 300 kB down/64 up, but pings seem to be pretty good, especially to local game servers.

Oh contrare. Cable and DSL BOTH slow down when more people get on. Cable just slows down in your neighborhood and DSL slows down at the switching office.

well, i got shafted ( what a suprise ) by OOL, anyway it looks like it will be another two days before they throw the switch in my town...oh well, two more days of agony, the reward better be mighty sweet As far as OOL speed, they upgraded all of their lines and dumped the first contractor who helped them with the initial service. Right now they are laying down fiber to all locations as wells as adding more nodes for the new users. Here is the speedtest from dslreports.. I also serached the forums on speedguide.net and looked for users' opinions as well as avg. d/l u/l speeds on OOL and I have to say that it looks very promising. Obviously I won't know for sure till tue/wed. , but at this point I could honestly care less ... any broadband is better than dialup.

Yeah I had my dsl for about 5 months then moved out of area. Now I am back on 56k and I tell you but the dsl was the best experience I have ever had on the internet. Take my word BROADBAND OR BUST!

I'm in Bayport, 11705 - they finished installation in Bayport and Holbrook during this weekend (yesterday?), but apparently they still have some loose ends to tie up. Go to the Wiz and ask an OOL rep. whether or not the service is available in Bellport.
