caltech is still much harder to get into than CAL or ucla... but I think its smaller in terms of size (only technical majors IIRC)

cal poly is a state system, while cal and ucla are UC systems.

CAL vs UCLA depends on the major, but I am skewed towards CAL since I graduated from there

nope. UCLA is good for their medical school, CAL is much stronger in engineering (especially EECS)

Cal Poly is one of the best engineering schools in the state. It ranks behind Berkeley, but ahead of UCLA and UCSD.

Cal Poly sucks at the non-science, non-engineering majors though. Then it's just another state school.

I would have never put Cooper Union and Engineering together in the same box. :Q

SDSU is not that great IMO. I would pick UCR or UCSC over SDSU anyday, but Cal Poly is a great school. I would place it just behind Davis, Irvine, and SB and in front of Riverside and Santa Cruz.

In years past, to get into either school all you had to do was be elgible to apply to a UC in the first place. I had friends that got into Riverside and Santa Cruz without even applying, just because they automatically forward UC applications there when they reject people from the other ones.

To get into SDSU out of high school though, you need about a 3.5 on average. This is only based on competitiveness to get into the school of course, not talking about the actual academics, but if you'd rather goto Riverside or Santa Cruz, then it must be your birthday because just about anyone can get in.

I know people with 3.2 GPAs, 1000 SAT that get into both Irvine and SB. Davis is a toss up depending on the major, but Davis smells like cows.

I actually graduated a year ago from Cal Poly with a degree in comp sci. It's a good school, and I actually picked it over some UC's because it was cheaper and had a good reputation in industry.

It's great for internships, and I had no problem finding a great job out of college. A lot of my friends who went to UC's are now in grad school, because they couldn't find a job. If you have any questions about the school feel free to ask.

What sort of grades would you need to get in there? Would they require a super-student? eg someone who has a super GPA, tons of extracurriculars and so forrth?

Do most American schools at the higher end of the spectrum (MIT, Caltech, etc) require much outside of academic performance? (I don't follow American schools).

if you can generalize anything about CSU's vs UC's, it's that the CSU's are usually more focused on preparing the student for a job right away, while the UC's tend to have a higher # of students go off to grad school. For example, something like 21 of the 24 CSU's offer a pretty comprehensive business program, with degrees in bus. administration or the alike. Something like half the UC's don't even have business programs, they only have econ.

Cal Poly SLO rejected me in 1999, bastards. Then I kept getting a bunch of damn letters from Cal Poly Pomona asking me to go there. Well, I didn't want to go to Pomona, and I didn't really want to go to San Jose state, which also accepted me, so I went to a community college for a while. Eventually I ended up at CSU Sacramento because I had to get out of my parents house.

I grew up in Santa Cruz, I live in Davis, and I have friends at Cal Poly SLO. If I had to rank some of these schools, I'd put them at:

UC Davis
Cal Poly SLO
UC Santa Cruz

I actually think Sac. State is pretty comparable to UCSC in terms of education. Santa Cruz costs a lot more and has a pretty campus in a forest next to a beach, though.

Cal Poly is an excellent undergraduate engineering school. It has no PHD program and so is focused on teaching you, not research. It is the 9th highest ranked engineering school without a PHD program. So not competing with MIT, Caltech, Carnegie Mellon, etc...

It is a state school and costs some $15k a year for California residents.

I am currently going to Rose-Hulman in Indiana which is #1 on that engineering list. Here it is.

I will say one thing. San Luis Obispo is a much better town than Terre Haute.

A great family friend went to Cal Poly and loved it. They have excellent ties to industry in Ca. I have some friends going there now.
