I'm missing 4GB's! :(

I just installed WinXP and I'm about to reformat my D: drive, but it says the capacity is only 48GB when it should be 52GB or so!

(I left 8GB for WinXP and the rest for files)

Before I installed, I went into fdisk and deleted all my current partitions and then added them again. I then went into XP setup and formatted my C: partition, and have yet to format my D: parition..

Any ideas of what went wrong or how to fix this?

Whent he sell harddrives, the sell them by 1gb=1,000mb and 1mb=1,00kb, etc... when really 1gb=1,024mb and 1mb=1,024kb. quick explanation is that all computers work in 2's and 2^10=1024. so really when you bought a 60 gb hard drive, you were only really buying a 60,000,000,000 byte hard drive which turns out to be 55.88gb, and when you take the 8gb out for your c: partition, you are only left with about 48gb...

so the answer to your question is that the space was never really there. it was just a cheap scheme the hard drive manufacturer played on you
