I'm hoping there are better options besides windows copy+paste when it comes to moving files through a home network. It seems windows doesn't like to maximize the speed of the transfer. Task manager will show anywhere from 20% to .1% of utilization while transfering a file.

A perfect analogy would be how Download accelerator maxes out your connection while if you simply right click > save as you don't achieve the same speeds.

I setup one laptop to allow incoming connections (VPN) then tried to connect from another computer and it connects but then drops it shortly afterwards. PLus no files show up so I don't know if I could do anything anyway.

Thanks

You could try Filezilla server and client. They're pretty efficient, but there could be something else somewhat better out there. I'd doubt that Windows Explorer / etc., are the only problems when you're seeing low utilization -- there may be a number of other bottlenecks that you have to deal with to get utilization high; most of them likely in the hardware. Transferring small files is also going to be slower because of the relatively high overhead.

HFS is working perfectly. Transferring about 2MB/s using DAP to verify. Around 23% of network speed. I'm using homemade cables, going to replace with factory this weekend then see the difference and then both should have 1Gbps links. Right now one is 100Mbps and the other is 1Gbps.

If it doesn't improve after using factory cables then I don't know what the bottleneck is. Hard drive? My comp is a p4 2.8g and other is centrino 1.8 I think.

Yeah that is pretty slow. You should be able to get around 9MB/s

Yeah, little slow! Any filters on your network?

Everything is 1Gb/s now. Max speed around 10MB/s. Factory cables all around. Guess its the comp being the bottle neck or maybe windows firewall. Only 8% but oh well.

If every thing set correctly you should get around 20-25MB/sec.

How do you figure that? 100Mbit = 12.5MB/s. The max he should be getting is 12.5MB/s, which is unrealistic. I find that 7-8MB/s is the max I can get on my 100Mbit home connection.

Also, some on demand anti-virus programs can slow you down a lot.

You missed the part where he wrote that he's running gigabit now. He should be able to at least 20-25 MB/s in this case. I'd aim for something close to drive speed.
