These arguments about what the founding fathers meant in the second amendment are hilarious to me. Does anyone actually think that if they could peek 250 years into the future to see what we’ve become that they would have worded it that way? And furthermore, if they still would have written it the same even with that knowledge, then do we really care what they have to say on the subject?

I suspect they’d be trying to comprehend womens rights and slavery ending before they even went near the 2nd

A query: if they didn't know what would come in 250 years, couldn't possibly fashion the 2A with an AR-15 (or anything similar) in mind, could the same not also be said of the 1A and the Internet? Should the 1A be scrutinized as well?

I'd argue that unfettered propaganda between the world's populations has done more damage to our civilization's stability than semi automatic weapons.

Yes. I agree that we need to look at that as well, It just is not as clear what the right solution is for the problems we face with the First Amendment's Free Speech clause. I have a few ideas, I'm just not sure if they are good ones, but if you want to start a 'how do we fix the problems with free speech' thread I'll be happy to debate them with you there.

I think it is just sheer exhaustion of the demand side. There is only so many times a month a person can panic buy a thousand dollar murder toy before they decide to maybe skip this weeks mass shooting driven moral panic and risk that the DemoRATS! will take the guns away before the next mass shooting.

thats literally about a hundred billion dollars you're asking from the Fed.
How much do you think guns cost? The vast majority of guns out there are rather cheap handguns, probably less than $300 new.
You throw a billion dollars at a buyback programs with a few incentives and advertisements, and you will all but destroy the second hand gun market.
Do that yearly along with a good national background check system that checks for mental, social, and financial instability and a few laws about securing a handgun and reporting stolen guns, and you will be on track to end gun violence in the US in a decade.

As was mentioned, the founders had a penchant for flowery language. That said, our language may look just as obtuse in a few hundred years. Hence the importance of very, very specific language, as well as a willingness to adjust.

1/8 of our military budget to prevent 40K needless deaths a year? Plus the health care costs are of those that are only wounded? A fucking bargain.
Umm, we wont spend 1/8th of our military budget to make first world schools or give universal healthcare that saves a million needless deaths per year.
Think about that.

Indeed, 1/8th our military budget could save a hell of a lot more than 40k people if it were spent smarter than buying back guns.

Or a better way to look at it, we're already doing smarter things with that money.

I guess sure, if a 280% return on that money each year into the future seems dumb to you.

I'd just like to remind you that right now Bernie could be our president and actually fixing problems but NOOOOOOOO!!!!
Debbie Wasserman Shultz decided it would be more fun to ass-fuck America right to hell.

I guess you are just another Q nut from a different tree and believe there was some big conspiracy against Bernie and not the fact that more people voted for Hillary than Bernie in the primaries.

I just want you to know that that makes you look really, really, fucking stupid, like maga level stupid.

Is that a real fall, or just an end to a spike during the pandemic? i.e. is it just returning to pre-pandemic levels? I could imagine the pandemic increasing anxiety about 'end times' and/or 'government over-reach' in some, and now that factor is receding.

I believe the founding fathers did envision exactly what could happen in 250 years, exactly what could go terrible wrong. Certainly Benjamin Franklin envisioned the possibilities when Franklin said “A republic, if you can keep it.
