Bringing children into this world on $13 a month is a human rights violation. This woman sickens me.

1:1 translation or not, this woman couldn't even afford the most basic neccesities for her children. In my view what she did is extremely immoral i.e. she brought pain and suffering to innocent people.

Yeah, India is a pretty messed up place. Despite all of its growth, and the same can be said for China, there is still massive poverty. I've read about wife burnings in India, because the husbands didn't want to give up the dowry in a divorce.

3. India cannot enforce the rules that China does to such an extent because its a democracy. They cannot force people to only have one kid.

That's actually a good thing. Mass termination is hardly the solution.

Yeah, but there are some serious issues, democracy or not, involving that caste system and the poor in India - in addition to the problems already associated with the poor.

Most if not all of the prosperity that india has seen in the last 2 decades has been centered and focused on the urban environment. It needs to be evenly or atleast fairly spread to the rural area because overall, India is still a agricultural economy. Its sad, but there are a few things to understand:
1. The cost of living does not translate...many people live comfortable lives for about a $1.50 a day. Yes, this family was very poor and $13 a month isnt enough anywhere.
2. People have kids with the mentality of more hands to work, not more hands to feed. This is a reality and one living in the West might not understand.

India is not a capitalist country. You should know that.Originally posted by: Proletariat

*nod* I remember a while back, some group or other got an initiative going in India and put up billboards contrasting a woman with ~10 kids living in poverty to a woman with 2 kids living comfortably. In polls, the vast majority of people thought the woman with 2 kids must have had something wrong with her reproductive system It's not going to happen by itself, and the problem's getting worse.
