Tempting, with 1GB RAM / 30 GB it should be good for XP as well.

The Toughbook tablet looks interesting too, a non-ruggedized version in the $4-600 range might finally get me to buy a tablet.

Well, as I noted the touchpad is in a different place. I think this broke the deal for the Cloudbook for some people. Also, double the RAM doesn't hurt. But yeah, probably same factory in China.

I am waiting on the 6 cell wind. From the tests I have seen in this segment SSD gets you nothing in performance, just shock resistance. With that in mind: 80GB HD, wifi, bluetooth(must have for smartphone tethering), 1GB RAM, amd a 10" screen for $499. Sign me up. What I really want is a linux version for $399 but they have cripples it so the XP version it is. It is looking like September at the earliest.

What are the cripples on the linux version?

The Acer One is also looking good.

Only 512MB of ram, not bluetooth(must have for tethering my phone), only a 3 cell battery(all you get for the time being on any of them due to shortages, but the XP version will be a 6 cell)

The whole lot of these 'mini notebooks' appear very comparable. They all use the same processor, the same chipset, and comparable storage media.

For that reason, I'm thinking the Acer Aspire One looks like the best deal. It's the cheapest, looks the nicest, and is smaller and lighter than most of the other options.

Pretty much. Other than some minor differences they are very similiar, which is why Asus and there crazy prices need to get a reality check. I also agree the acer one is a pretty good bargain but has a couple features I need. Looks like I am still holding out for the 6 cell wind. I do like the looks of the dell but it seems it is going to be a while before it comes out and I bet it is going to be priced on the high side.

Rumor has it that the Dell will cost $300 and is coming out in August.

I'll probably wait for the 6-cell batteries as well. Hopefully they won't add too much to the price, size, and weight of these machines. The Wind, Aspire One, and the Dell all look pretty much equal to me. Whichever of the three is cheapest with a 6-cell battery gets my money.

Thats new to me, I didn't know that. What I need is 1.6Ghz Atom, 10" screen, wifi(n would be great), 6 cell, and bluetooth. Whoever does that the cheapest gets my money. Right now the only one is MSI. Hopefully dell comes around the same price as they would be my preference over MSI. I am not going back out of town until September so I really don't need it any time soon, I just have that new toy fever.

The Asus 1000H had the price dropped to $549. That in my mind makes it the best 10" available. For $50 over the wind you get better wifi, 1.8Ghz OC, much better trackpad, and much better speakers. Seems to be a good deal. Plus I am betting MSI will raise the price a bit when the 6 cell ships and makes it a third SKU.

Yeah, but the keyboard on the Eees blows. I'm waiting on Dell's entry before I get a netbook.

It is supposed to be much better than previous units, pretty much the same size as the wind. From a video I saw, I believe on notebook review, it looked like it had a pretty decent amount of flex to it. In my list of priorities a nice keyboard isn't at the top. Pretty much the most typing I do at home is on forums. I need more of a media and net machine that a typing machine. For someone who is going to be typing a lot I could certainly see it as an issue.

I was looking forward to the Dell but the screen size kills it for me. I am set on 10". I probably won't buy until it is out though so we will see.

Do you have a link to the review? I haven't really been paying attention to Asus lately because of their ridiculous pricing, but am now interested.

Yep, I saw that too. On the same note it looks like intel is regretting it a bit. Both should have seen this coming. Grandma doesn't need a quadcore to check here email. A couple years ago computers got to the point of being plenty fast for the average user to check mail, surf the net, and use office.

a couple? my mom uses an athlon 1600+ box at work with 512mb ram/XP and does email, browsing and quickbooks on it. its plenty fast and easily more than a couple of years old. they wont be upgrading this thing unless quickbooks requires vista or 7 at some point.

anyway, i skipped the netbook idea and decided to get a T60, as itll last me a while and id really like to get a smartphone in the near future.

Since the Acer Aspire one is supposed to come with either SSD or a HD for storage, does anybody know if it's possible to add a 2.5" drive to the 8gb SSD version, or are there actual differences in design that make it impossible?

I think some of these use 1.8" drives, not 2.5". You'll have to find out which.
